Canadian Anti Fraud Center reports $15.6 million losses due to romance fraud

In 2013 there were 1,728 complaints of romantic fraud reported to the Canadian Anti Fraud Center (CAFC). Of those complaints, 1,149 victims reported combined financial losses exceeding $15.6 million – more than any other identified financial loss due to fraud.

According to the CAFC, the romance scam is the most under-reported form of fraud, mostly due to the severe financial hardship and personal embarrassment and torment the victim experiences after realizing they have been taken advantage of.
