South Carolina murder-suicide: another incident of raging domestic violence – Columbia, South Carolina |

The incident was shocking and tragic. On Wednesday, Brian Sweatt, 27, of Greenwood County, South Carolina, gunned down his girlfriend, Chandra Fields, her parents, and two of her young nephews, and then turned the gun on himself. Authorities say it was a “domestic dispute.”

The video above blew me away for several reasons.

1. Bryan Sweatt had an extensive criminal record of burglary, forgery and assault. Yet the Greenwood Sheriff said, “I see nothing in his prior record that would indicate anything of this magnitude.”

2. Residents in Greenwood County are used to violence in and around their community. One woman interviewed says, “We just move on.”

3. South Carolina ranks Number One in the nation when it comes to violence against women.

It’s true. The Violence Policy Center reported that South Carolina’s rate of females murdered by males in 2.54 per 100,000, which is  more than double the national average. But the entire report is shocking.

“Nine women each week are shot to death by their husband or intimate partner,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “That’s nearly 500 domestic gun violence deaths each year more than twice the number of servicewomen killed in military conflicts since the Korean War. We urgently need better policies that protect women and their families from this senseless violence. No American, adult or child, should live in a perpetual state of fear. It’s inhumane.”
