Understanding the Sociopath: Why antisocials, narcissists and psychopaths break the rules of life
By Donna Andersen, author of Lovefraud.com
Understanding the Sociopath explains, in plain language, the 12% of the population who do not play by the same rules of life as the rest of us. These master manipulators, who have antisocial, narcissistic, borderline, histrionic or psychopathic personality disorders, seem normal at first, but their objective is to use and exploit us.
You may already be dealing with one of the 30 million adults in the United States who could be diagnosed with these serious personality disorders. If so, Understanding the Sociopath explains why they do what they do, why they will never change, and why you need to get them out of your life.
This book is a curated collection of blog articles from Lovefraud.com, the premier Internet website on how to recognize and recover from sociopaths. The content is presented in easy-to-read, bite-sized pieces; you won’t be overwhelmed by technical jargon. Articles include:
- 10 translations of ‘I love you’ when spoken by a sociopath
- Sociopaths and double lives
- The truth about sex with sociopaths
- Why psychopaths don’t change
- Letters to Lovefraud: I am a sociopath
- 10 things sociopaths want (besides money)
- Will the sociopath treat the next wife better?
- The sociopathic MO in three easy steps
- Why do psychopaths want to mess with your head?
- Do sociopaths know what they are?
Understanding the Sociopath includes dozens of stories and questions submitted by Lovefraud readers, with analysis and answers by Donna Andersen, author of Lovefraud.com. You’ll see how sociopaths operate in real life, so if someone you know engages in destructive behavior, you’ll be able to spot the warning signs.
Donna Andersen previously wrote, Red Flags of Love Fraud — 10 signs you’re dating a sociopath. Her first book, Love Fraud, tells her outrageous personal story of her marriage to a sociopathic con artist, and was awarded five stars by the Midwest Book Review. Donna is also co-author of a peer-reviewed scientific article in the Journal of Counseling and Development, and has presented her research to the Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy.
Sociopaths exist, and they aren’t all serial killers. Understanding the Sociopath demystifies their behavior, so you can recognize them and protect yourself.

InformativeI received an advance copy of this excellent book and I eagerly devoured the contents until I got to the end! I’ve returned time and time to Lovefraud and this book is a valuable tool for anyone wishing to understand what a relationship with a sociopath looks like and the likely outcome. I recommend reading this book as it’s well written and very informative.

Excellent Book!!!!!“Understanding the Sociopath” by Donna Andersen is the first in a series of books that she is writing in order to educate the public (i.e. those of us who are loving and empathetic and NOT personality disordered) about sociopaths. It is an excellent book!!!!! Therefore, I highly recommend “Understanding the Sociopath” to anyone who could be viewed as a potential target by a “social predator”. And for those of us who have suffered at the hands of a sociopath, I want to thank Donna Andersen at Lovefraud.com for always being a guiding light in the darkest of times!!!!!

Understanding the SociopathLove Fraud unflinchingly details the mental, physical and emotional trauma suffered by its author in falling for a conscienceless user who viewed her, a beautiful and successful woman, as prey. Should readers attempt to downplay one incident, dozens more reinforce a horrible theme: Inhuman usury. The features of a selfish predator upon his heartbroken partner convinced me, (not that I need convincing) that it is we who must take charge because they never will. But there’s an even stronger theme : Author, Donna Anderson shares her personal and detailed map to the genuine joy and happiness she achieved in her life. This is a compelling story of hope. As a secular humanist who has no idea about the notion of god, or this book’s claim that individuals choose their destinies or that traumas from past lives affect our present lives, I’d still recommend this educational read to secular humanists or atheists because of the convincing detail it provides – and the unstoppable hope. Admirably written, with love, this story guides readers to the happiness that awaits.

Do Not Understand The Sociopath At Your Own Risk . . .Understanding the Sociopath is the first of a series of books by Donna Andersen, laying the foundation of spotting the sociopath early in the relationship, when getting out is easiest. Sociopaths are dangerous in all kinds of relationships, but most dangerous in romantic relationships, where we are most vulnerable. Although sociopaths are a small percentage of the population, they more than make up their relatively small numbers by the great damage they cause. Arm yourself with this book, study it often, and keep it at your bedside! By Monica P.
