“Half as Much” is a great old country song sung by Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, Rosemary Clooney (my favorite), and many others. It’s composer was Curley Williams (not related to Hank Williams.)
The song lyrics say, “You’re nice to me, when there’s no one else around; you only build me up, to tear me down.” I think most of us here, know by now that abusers do just the opposite! They build us up when there ARE other people around, then “behind closed doors” they light-into us — with whatever their chosen abusive methods they prefer — beatings, extreme irritability and perfectionism, major put-downs, gaslighting, emotional abuse, abusing the children in front of us…
So I altered some lyrics, and wrote another verse. These are not copyrighted, because I wrote them myself. I’m a singer, by the way. I love this song. I grew up hearing it.
Here’s what I’ve got:
(E) A A7 D
You’re nice to me when there’s people all around
B B7 E E7
But then at home, you cruelly put me down.AND
A A7 D
You’re nice to me when there’s others all around
B B7 E E7
You only build me up to take me downHERE’S THE FULL NEW VERSE I WROTE:
If you loved me half as much as you say
You wouldn’t bully me almost every day.
I work at home, while you go out to play
You say the words, but then you go away.
THEN THE ORIGINAL CHORUS STARTS WITH:
If you missed me half as much as I miss you
You wouldn’t stay away half as much as you do
[You can look up the whole song in YouTube.]

Many song lyrics are really off.

Yes! I changed them for my own singing. I do that a lot with many songs that I sing.

Hi Synergy, heres a good song for everyone who is just out of their relationship & first imposting the No contact rule:
Kelly Clarkson “Since you been gone”…google those words with the word “video” to watch her music video for free:
Here’s the thing
We started out friends
It was cool, but it was all pretend
Yeah, yeah
Since you been goneYou’re dedicated, you took the time
Wasn’t long till I called you mine
Yeah, yeah
Since you been goneAnd all you’d ever hear me say
Is how I picture me with you
That’s all you’d ever hear me sayBut since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I’m so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get what I want
Since you been goneHow can I put it? You put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah, yeah
Since you been goneHow come I’ve never heard you say
I just want to be with you?
Guess you never felt that wayBut since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I’m so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get what I want
Since you been goneYou had your chance, you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth, I just can’t take it
Again, and again, and again, and againSince you been gone (since you been gone)
I can breathe for the first time
I’m so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get, I get what I wantI can breathe for the first time
I’m so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you), now I get (I get)
You should know (you should know)
That I get
I get what I want
Since you been gone
Since you been gone

Dear Jan7, thanks for sharing — great lyrics! Great video. Very original, funny and powerful video!
Here’s another powerful song — I’m learning to sing/play this one:
Go to YouTube and do a search for I Love You So Much I Hate Myself
