I am excited to watch “Gaslit” on Starz later this month. Starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, this is an 8 episode miniseries about Martha Mitchell, outspoken and controversial wife of John Mitchell, attorney general during Nixon’s administration. Martha had very little “filter” and was widely popular in Washington from 1969 until the events of 1972 for her outspoken opinions and gossip about Washington politicians, much of which she gleaned from her husband’s correspondence and bedroom talk. Martha was instrumental in exposing the 1972 Watergate Scandal and bringing down President Nixon, who thoroughly despised her. Nixon was so afraid of her – she was known as The Mouth of the South – that he ordered her husband to keep her in the dark about the Watergate going-ons. Her husband ultimately chose the President over his beloved wife and ordered her kidnapped, drugged, and held prisoner to keep her quiet. When she finally escaped and tried to blow the whistle on what was going on, the Nixon administration rejected her account, made her into a spectacle, and spread rumors that “she was an alcoholic suffering from mental illness.” They essentially destroyed her reputation, her marriage and her sanity. It wasn’t until years later that the truth came out and she was exonerated, but by then the stress had wrecked her life. She and John Mitchell separated and he remained loyal to Nixon until ultimately being charged and convicted of conspiracy, perjury, and obstruction of justice in 1975. She died of cancer in 1976, alone, broke and friendless, never really knowing she had been right all along.
Her story is tragic, yet so many of us who have dealt with powerful, disordered individuals can relate to what happened to her. She was made to question her reality, was told by her own family and very powerful people she was crazy, that things she saw, heard and read were not true, was ultimately destroyed by the press, abandoned by friends – all because she told the truth.

This was the closest catagory I could find matching what I wanted to say. I first became aware of narcissism 10 years ago. I’m 63 now. After learning what I learned I look back and see how many narcissist came into my life and derailed my life with failed promises.
Narcissism goes Way Beyond just our personal relationship. I’ll give you an example of what’s going on in my life right now. My mother was a narcissist she is now dead. My father was browbeaten but he sucked it up. My mother was always belligerent and negatively critical which is an understatement. Consequently my older brother who I adored died before my mother due to lack of validation. The guy was a genius and a gentle soul. Unlike my older brother I stood up to my mother in no uncertain terms. When you cross a narcissist you have a permanent Target on your back.
Fast forward parents died there is a will and it was very sloppily framed. My older half-sister is also a malignant narcissist. My younger brother is also a malignant narcissist who ruined his family on top of his chronic alcoholism. I suspect my sister drinks a lot of wine also being from California. My younger brother commandeered executorship by using undue influence on my father who had a stroke. A year-and-a-half later they do not communicate with me on a rational level. I don’t hear any numbers. I’m left out of any negotiations on the sale of my parents house. Which means my brother keeps moving ahead without asking my input. My sister is doing the same thing. They’re both play monkey in the Middle With Me.
Now it isn’t just my brother and sister causing problems. It was the lawyer to frame the horrible will with no details. It was the judge in the Surrogate Court we didn’t need to go to but since my Idiot Brother ponied up to $600 from money he stole from my father’s bank account to sign up for Surrogate Court. And because he paid the $600 which he did not need to do, the judges acting against me and not hearing my motions and objections because one I don’t have a narcissist lawyer. All the judges and lawyers want you to have a lawyer. I’m quite confident and reading contracts and their law books.
The chief of police is also narcissist entertaining my brother’s criminal Behavior. My point is we have a plate of narcissism that runs this country. It’s in the politics it’s in the legal system it’s in the medical profession. It’s in your public school system it’s in your college system. I know there are men who are narcissists but this seems to be a woman trait. I’m surrounded by self-serving narcissist who are stymieing the whole surrogate probate court process by entertaining my brother who is mentally ill, who does not communicate with me on the sane rationale level. So now I am doing battle with a bunch of evil individuals outside my family Circle entertaining both my sister and my brother while fighting the one guy who could have gotten everybody through this process a year ago. But the judges and lawyers are entertaining like mentally ill brother just to cause problems. Leaving out details this is basically where I am at in my life right now. Almost everybody to meet is narcissist on some level. -
