Donna & Lovefraud friends, I was watching you tube (on the internet free site of videos on all subjects) when a Ted. com talk came up on the feed titled: “How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime”. I thought this talk was extremely powerful and thought that it could easily be applied to the abuse that was inflected by the sociopath in our life & help all of us that have been effected by a sociopath to heal our body’s mind & spirit.
“How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime | Nadine Burke Harris
Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design — plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.
Find closed captions and translated subtitles in many languages at ted. com”In this TEd. com talk The fight or flight response mode she is taking about are your Adrenal glands!! The adrenal glands regulate your blood pressure, blood sugar, cortisol & adrenaline levels and over 50 hormones!! They are a HUGE DEAL!! but are over looked by pretty much every doctor. The doctor that specializes in adrenal gland issue is a Endocrinologist this is the expert you want to go to. Also look up “Adrenal fatigue’ on the net & you tube this is most like the mass population issue. It’s not just toxic relationship that affect the adrenal glands but, also poor diet, lack of sleep, too much too little exercise, daily stress, hormonal imbalance (even for men), alcohol & drugs (illegal or Rx) etc etc.
The good news is you CAN heal your adrenal glands..and this healing of the adrenal glands will help heal your mind, body & spirit.
Look up Adrenal fatigue.
One of the best ways to heal your adrenal glands is eating a very very clean healthy diet with lots & lots of vegetables. Also, possible hormonal balancing, plenty of rest & relaxation, sleep.
Google: “Super Juice me Documentary you tube”…this is one of the most powerful FREE documentaries I have ever watched, this should be mandatory for everyone. This documentary shows how much we are all suffering from also from a poor diet and how to heal your body including your adrenal glands. Also watch the free documentary called Sick, Fat & nearly dead on their website same name.
Also you can find lots of info on the adrenal glands on the net, you tube and also sites like Adrenal fatigue. org & Dr Lam. com or at your local library. (I have zero affiliation to these doctors but had to heal my adrenal glands after escaping the ex sociopath)

Jan, Great Ted Talk. I can attest to this being 100% the reality when it comes to childhood abuse. I listed to her list of abuses and could check every single box. And I can confirm that my fight or flight response is READILY available to me…sometimes when I need it least. And I have had breast cancer twice, without any family history.
I will also say that becoming more aware of how I react/respond helps me to weather some of the ups and downs. Even a small disagreement with my husband can sometimes create a lot of anxiety for me, and he is a ROCK. So I am able to, when I have a stronger reaction than necessary, talk myself down and find balance.
So the TED talk just confirmed what I already know (and what my therapist told me).

slim- I have a friend who had breast cancer. She had been a homemaker but became a personal trainer because exercise helps prevent cancer.

Thanks SG. You are right about exercise being essential in staving off some forms of cancer. I eat a very healthy diet and have always exercised, done yoga, gardened. So, what that tells me is early trauma is very strong and can take a toll on our bodies, even when we treat them well. And, I think re-triggering early trauma by engaging with other sociopaths (in adulthood) just worsens the situation.
I found myself in these disordered relationships for the better part of my adult life. Whether they were friends or lovers. I just swarmed to these types, I suppose hoping to heal my past. But, as we know, THAT doesn’t work. It only added more trauma on more trauma.
I am grateful for finally understanding who they are, and what my part has been in this dance.
