A helpful tip:
As easy as it is to make mistakes in what we post, it can be annoying, even embarrassing. There’s obvious evidence here of someone realizing they’d made an embarrassing mistake, then making a second post just one minute later to apologize for it–instead of doing what I’d do: go back and correct it before anyone sees! It’s a hundred to one that nobody had seen it yet.
But that’s only if they knew how to correct it! I’m betting many members don’t know how to do that, for a very good reason.
I was lucky. I always knew that used to be possible on the Forum. Then there was the software update, with useful new features… but what about the old ones? How can we still edit a post? I couldn’t see how. Yet I knew that feature ought to be there, so I persisted in looking.
Persistence pays off. The editing feature is indeed still there. I just literally “couldn’t see” it–not without peering very closely at the screen, and even then the contrast is so low, on my PC anyway, that it’s hard to make the words out. (I have red-green colorblindness, which may or may not have anything to do with it.)
However, if you do a SELECT ALL, either from the menu or simply by pressing Control-A, that reverses the colors on the screen and throws it up into sharp relief. At the top of every post, where the date and time appear on the left hand side, on the right just opposite is a previously invisible post number–like this: “#12345” for instance. And if it’s your own post and you’re logged in, that’s preceded by the words “EDIT | REPLY” in much smaller letters. Click on EDIT, and a window appears with the text of your original post, and you can correct or replace it and resubmit it.
And the REPLY feature, which is always there if you’re logged in, allows you to reply to a specific post from someone else, instead of just adding a post at the end of the thread.
