This is a lengthy and technical legal video so not sure if any readers here are interested but I found this very informative.
It’s a presentation by Dr Evan Stark to Family Court Judges.
The topic is “coercive control” which is an emerging new idea in the law to better understand domestic violence cases. The concept of “coercive control” explains how abusive relationships are about control and fear. Physical violence is secondary and only a small percentage of abusive relationships. The deciding factor in domestic violence is not physical battery but it is control and fear.
This is a new conceptual framework that some foreign countries and a few US states have already adopted. And it will hopefully become more widely adopted in the future as a better understanding of the dynamics of abusive relationships. So that the legal system begins to understand that abuse is about power and control, and not necessarily anything physical.

Sept 4 – thank you for posting this. I am familiar with the work of Dr. Evan Stark. He has been instrumental in explaining how coercive control works. He was also involved with the drafting of laws in England that make coercive control a crime. I hope laws are passed in the United States and elsewhere that do the same thing.
