      Internet scams are big business. The United Nations estimates that in 2023, $18 billion to $37 billion were lost in Asia alone due to cyber scams.

      Well, the people sending out scam emails, social media posts or making scam phone calls may themselves have been scammed. Last month, authorities from Thailand, China and Myanmar conducted an operation that rescued more than 7,000 people from around the world who were slaves trying to trick Americans and others out of their life savings.

      The people responded to ads for jobs, and found themselves locked in compounds, forced to make scam calls and starved or beaten if they failed. Read more:
