Geraldo Rivera provided his analysis of the ”¦ Natalee Holloway disappearance case. Prime suspect Joran Van Der Sloot has given a series of interviews proclaiming his total innocence. “The lie that he has fastened on,” Rivera pronounced, “is that he took her on the beach but didn’t have sex because he didn’t have a condom, then left her on the there. It’s at odds with the story he told earlier, but as he tells this story he becomes more confident and more glib. I believe there is a pathological aspect to this man.” The Factor concurred that Van Der Sloot seems psychologically unbalanced. “I can’t figure out why he wants do these interviews because he comes off as a sociopath. If he makes one slip-up he’s done. It looks to me like he’s a danger junkie – he likes this cat-and-mouse game, it’s exciting to him” (source)
Does it matter whether or not Joran van der Sloot is a sociopath/psychopath? Why not just be satisfied that he is a “criminal” and an evil person?
Yes, it does matter, because when dealing with a sociopath the usual rules of human interaction do not apply. Anyone who treats a sociopath as they would a non-disordered person is likely to get burned and to be implicated in the evil that sociopath does. Joran van der Sloot’s story illustrates this principle.
Joran’s father, Paulus, was an attorney many believed knew the truth about what happened to Natalie Halloway, the first young woman Joran was accused of murdering. Paulus strongly supported his son after the murder accusations first arose, and was even charged himself as an accessory after the fact, though the charges were dropped.
Paulus van der Sloot died of a sudden cardiac death last February and so did not live to see the result of his enabling of his son. Joran’s mother, Anita, is now alone to deal with the repercussions of the family’s enabling.
The lesson to be learned is that if you have a family member who has been charged with a serious crime, and that family member has psychopathic personality traits, or is diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, DO NOT HELP THAT PERSON IN ANY WAY.
Over and over again, we have said on this website that sociopaths are able to do evil in a large part because they are enabled by family members and various governmental agencies- including the judicial system and law enforcement. Well, law enforcement does it again.
It turns out that the FBI wired Joran $25,000 as part of a “sting” operation, as they were trying to arrest him for shaking down Natalie Halloway’s parents. According to former agent Paul Lindsay, “the FBI formula for extortion stings is, “set ’em up, pay ’em off, get ’em to talk, never let them leave the room without handcuffs on.” Because the FBI did not understand the psychology of their suspect, they let him leave the room and were out smarted by a sociopath.
The lesson to be learned here is that next time the FBI wants to sting a sociopath they should contact Lovefraud so that Donna and I can tell them not to give a sociopath any money”¦ that is unless they want the sociopath to use the money to kill someone.
One more lesson to be learned from the van der Sloot case is that media psychiatrists should stop confusing people with their false categorical statements. I came across this analysis of van der Sloot by psychiatrist Keith Ablow (who I have criticized before):
“Serial killers whether organized or disorganized are always made, never born. Having interviewed dozens of killers myself, I can tell you that it turns out that evil never appears ”˜out of the womb’.”
Well, I knew Rodney Alcala, and I can tell you that he was born with a disposition to become a serial killer that was present in his early childhood. Serial killers are both born and made. Evil is in the genes of some people but like many other traits it needs the right soil to take root and blossom.
The ONE thing that stood out in the interview was when he said in the beginning that the cops threatened him with putting his head under water and had a bucket right there. He said (as he stumbled) that he wasn’t scared and he told them.
THEN…..later…..he talked about how being ‘railroaded’ into the confession and using a scribble as a signiture…….
Well……If he wasn’t scared…..then why didn’t he refuse to sign the ‘false’ confession??????
He ‘showed’ he had power with the bucket….but not the confession?
He is a whore…..and he loves the attention of the media. Anyone in their right mind would NEVER give an interview BEFORE a trial!
He kept saying it wasn’t in his ADVANTAGE tospeak about certian issues…….
ADVANTAGE…..oh, he’s very ‘up’ on what is his advantages…..
Tactical error…..not getting on a plane in Lima for the Netherlands…..instead choosing Chile.
He also said he ‘turned’ himself in in Chile……and they lied.
Funny how sociopaths are surrounded by liars.
Hmmmmmmmmm
Get the ice pick out and have atem……
Haven’t read the thread entirely, but I am sure others have commented on that icy stare. I have to cover his face (his eyes from my view) on the television and I have done that for years with people like him (pedophiles, murderers, etc) that give me a certain gut feeling–now I know what they are…I had to turn off the interview early, but taped it to observe his behaviors later, and use mantras and positive visualizations to fall asleep. Keep that evil OUT!
It’s amazing how all these sociopaths would rather lie than tell the truth, despite having evidence that “speaks for itself” – he is guilty and he knows it, but he still spins a web of lies. He’ll be sitting in a jail in Peru for the rest of his earthly life. He can say (and think) whatever he wants, as long as he is away from the rest of humanity.
bluejay – that’s an interesting pointt – they would rather lie. regardless of the ‘truth’ that is apparent to everyone. i wonder if that has to do in part with how they use language. if they have little or no connection to the emotional charge of language, perhaps they can’t do anything but keep using language in odd ways when they get caught.
something like: i have bought red pants and i am saying they are blue. i will defend against ALL reasonable objections that this is the truth. Now, is this absolutely the same as: I didn’t kill that woman, there was an unknown man here and he did it. and i will defend this statement against the physical evidence. is it that they have one way of dealing with things for every situation regardless of the content of the situation?
the ppath of my aquaint was caught red handed and video taped…in the tape she argues with the people who caught her out in the middle of one of her scams. she talked word salad, denied denied denied that she had done anything. and the BIGGEST reaction they got out of her was when they said she’d been doing something for x years and she had to say it was y years. sigh. She denied the con, and then became engaged when they got the timeline wrong. yah, uh huh, THAT was the most important thing….they got her timeline wrong. jayzus.
if someone have no conscience, forms no bonds, doesn’t relate to the emotionality of language, and for whom the ‘win’ is THE most important thing – then ‘truth’ has nothing to do with evidence.
one_step_at_a_time,
I personally think that their thinking is completely skewed, the brain isn’t wired correctly, sometimes not knowing the true reality of a situation. It’s scary. My h-spath wants to convey this image of himself that isn’t completely true – he’ll tell me that he’s paid a bill, finding out later that he hasn’t. If he’s paid the bill (in his mind), then I will approve of him (also getting off his case), making himself happy and me happy. The fact that it isn’t paid is of no consequence – it meets his present need (for respect and approval) to lie, appearing to be a responsible, good guy. That’s my take on the sociopath’s mindset (some of them at least).
bluejay -‘meets his needs’…hmmm, the ppath of my aquaint is always pretending to be someone who is preyed upon, victimized…so how she presented in the vid is quite consistent with that image. she knew she was being taped and acted accordingly. however, she is ruthless online with the peeps who reveal her scam. as her many sock puppets, but also as ‘herself’. there is a little disconnect there – i don’t the logic behind attacking people online – how does that show her a vic and not a perp? mind you she’s always wailing on about how ‘nothing online is real’. sigh.
one_step_at_a_time,
They can be both – predator (pursuing and preying on people) and victim (in their own thinking). My h-spath lies to get what he wants (different things) and will try and gain sympathy (without giving someone all the facts of a situation). These people are wired (in my opinion) to be devious, human wrecking balls.
UPDATE: The creep attacked a guard and tried to ESCAPE! This guy is sooooo arrogant! LOL
http://nancygrace.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/01/rpt-joran-van-der-sloot-tries-to-escape-jail-attacks-guard/
He couldn’t get out of the country before he was arrested the first time and stay free, what makes him think he can “blend in” and get away NOW! His face is known by every human on earth with a TV.
This is so interesting, if you saw the late night news story on him he bragged about befriending the guards and teaching them English. I wonder if that was part of his escape plan too. Not very well thought out, he’ll probably not ever see extradition to the US to face charges here or the outside of that prison.
I don’t think he will live very long if they turn him out in gen-pop there in Peru, and otherwise they will have to keep him in solitary for the 30-35 years and THEN deport him to US…not a nice or exciting life for him. Oh, so sorry. NOT!
