Many people think of the term “judging others” in a negative way. I think a lot of this comes from the Biblical admonition found in which Jesus said, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (Matthew 7:1). Matthew 7:2-5 says, “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” What Jesus was condemning here was hypocritical, self-righteous judgments of others.
I frequently hear others say, “Well, I’m not judging him ”¦” when they talk about how someone they know has done something that is less than morally upright. When I was a young person in this community of mostly Scots-Irish Protestants, people were frequently “judged” or compared to community standards of behavior. If a woman or girl had a child out of wedlock, she was judged for doing so. She was held up to a standard of behavior that she had publicly failed to meet. Her child, unfortunately, was also “judged” because of the mother’s behavior. In fact, I have a friend who was born of an adulterous affair, and “everyone” knew who her father was, and though no one was nasty to her face, my friend still grew up feeling “judged” as a “bastard.” She had a “rough” childhood and adolescence, which included drug use, and early, promiscuous sexual behavior as a result of her feeling judged. Fortunately, she was able to pull herself out of her downward spiral, escape the vicious psychopath that she married. (He was charged with killing his mistress’s husband in a cold-blooded, execution-style murder.) My friend escaped from this man, married a good man, and has managed to raise her own daughter as a “good kid.” She has also managed to salvage her self-esteem and her place in the community as a well-liked and respected member of this community
What is “judging” exactly? What is fair judgment, and what is unfair judgment? Well, to me, “judging” what a person thinks or “reading their mind” is “magical thinking” and it is not possible to do fairly. No matter what people do, I can’t really know what they were thinking. One of the things that frustrated me the most in dealing with this “mind reading” was the gaslighting my egg donor did when she excused herself for lying to me by saying that if she had told me the truth I would have been so upset I would have “thrown a fit” because she loaned money to the psychopath my son had sent to infiltrate our family. I was so upset at the time that she presumed to be able to “read my mind” and I swore to her that I would not have “thrown a fit.” But how do you prove a negative when someone presumes to be able to read your mind and predict your behavior?
Mind reading and behavior prediction, based upon the ability to magically read one’s mind, is unfair judgment. It is, I think what Jesus was condemning in Matt 7:1 “Judge not least ye be judged.” However, showing discernment in our observations is not the kind of “judgment” that Jesus was condemning. James 3:11-12 says (11) Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? (12) Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives or a grapevine bear figs? No spring yields both salt water and fresh. The author James is showing us here that we ought to be able to discern things that are right and good versus things that are bad by observation, not mind-reading ”¦ and that we should be able to see that a grapevine should bear grapes, and a fig tree figs, not the other way around. We ought to be able to look at a person’s “fruit” (behavior) and tell what that person is.
When we deal with a psychopath, many times they wear a “mask” to cover up what they are doing; they tell lies to throw us off the track. We aren’t perfect ourselves, and we know that we aren’t perfect, so we try not to “judge” others to a standard of perfection which we ourselves cannot reach. However, by trying to be empathetic to others and to not “judge” them, when we know ourselves not to be perfect, we sometimes go to the other extreme of not holding others to any standard of behavior at all. We calm ourselves by telling ourselves we are not “judging” this person, when in fact, we are overlooking their obvious bad behavior that repeats itself over and over and over.
While it may be comforting for us to think that there “is good in everyone” and that “even the worst person can change,” there are people who are quite satisfied to use and abuse others like objects or possessions, who actually obtain glee from using others.
Psychopathy isn’t “diagnosed” by one bad deed, or even two or three bad deeds, but is seen as a longstanding pattern of abusive behavior and an attitude of entitlement. Many times this bad behavior is masked behind a layer of “addiction” to drugs or alcohol, so that we may think that “if only he didn’t drink/drug” he would be fine, but this is “judging” in the wrong direction, by giving the person the benefit of the doubt about why they drink/drug. Judging in favor of someone (mind reading) about why they do bad acts is just as dangerous as mind reading the other direction and blaming someone for thoughts that you have magically put in their heads.
We need, as healthy individuals, to be able to discern behavior as abusive and to avoid the person who does these abusive things repeatedly, and to be able to judge/discern that person as an unhealthy individual for us to associate with. The reason doesn’t matter why they are unhealthy, and it really doesn’t matter if they qualify clinically as a psychopath or not, they are not healthy for us. The relationship drags us down.
The Biblical or social admonition to “judge not” doesn’t condemn us to being stupid to the point that we observe not, or that we fail to condemn bad behavior in either ourselves or others. We are expected to use our conscience to monitor our own behavior and when we fail to live up to the standard that we have set for ourselves we should feel “guilt” which tells us, “don’t do that again.” By the same token, we should also be able to see that the behavior of someone else is hurtful to us or others, and is not the kind of behavior that we would allow ourselves to do, so we are not obligated to tolerate it from someone else.
The bottom line is that if we don’t think that someone else’s behavior is something we would think is “okay to do,” then we do not have to allow that behavior or that person to affect our lives. If you won’t lie and cheat, don’t tolerate someone who does. If you wouldn’t steal, don’t tolerate someone who does. Stand up and say, “it is wrong to lie and steal, it is wrong to cheat. I won’t do that, and I won’t tolerate that.” That does not make you a “judgmental person,” it makes you a wise person. It makes you a discerning person. It makes you a healthy person.
Dear yes,
There is a thread here recently about Ps who commit suicide, and you need to read it, it is recent—it is the ultimate Fark you for most of them….they lose control and then must hurt those they leave behind as a way to try to exert control…control…control.
All I can say, Yes, is that I am GLAD YOU ARE FREE. My guess is that his latest victim caught on….and he lost control. TOO BAD. I hope that she can heal and move on. I know that you will be able to move on now. God bless.
Seriously,
Well, you should be able to accomplish getting the car back one way or another, at some cost or another in terms of cash money. At least you didn’t marry him or have children to co-parent with him.
Yea, Background checks are interesting aren’t they? VERY interesting! Glad you found the truth before you were more deeply involved. (((hugs))) and God bless.
dear yesitsme – I am speechless…I would hate to get that news about my X but it wouldnt surprise me as he had attempted it many times, but I dont think he had ever planned on dying, just getting attention…Hugz to you ….
yesitsme,
so very sorry about that news, but you already know that it had nothing to do with you, right? you were only a prop in his story line. He created it, not you.
God has his reasons for what He allows to happen. my deepest sympathy to you for the pain he caused you.
Oxy,
thank you for writing about this. It is one of the subjects that most intrigues me about spaths. Let me explain.
You said “The bottom line is that if we don’t think that someone else’s behavior is something we would think is “okay to do,” then we do not have to allow that behavior or that person to affect our lives. If you won’t lie and cheat, don’t tolerate someone who does. If you wouldn’t steal, don’t tolerate someone who does. Stand up and say, “it is wrong to lie and steal, it is wrong to cheat. I won’t do that, and I won’t tolerate that.””
The reason this is so important is because I suspect that my spath killed a pastor, a man with six kids and a man of God, by using the pity ploy.
Spath has never gotten his pilots license even though he flies commercially. He doesn’t even have a private pilot license.
So, from what I understand, he told Ben, an AI, that he has (pity ploy here) ” dyslexia, needs to support my family (me), can’t earn a living, is trying SOOOO HARD to pass the test, but just can’t because I’m not good at tests!!!! Life is unfair to people like me. a mechanical genius who isn’t good at reading and writing. If only someone could help me. blah blah blah blah, etc.. pity ploy beyond anything you could imagine. a spath from hell”
So he convinced Ben to fill in a log book with his hours logged as a student pilot. Most of this is not clear to me. there was much that didn’t make sense, but he told me that Ben had fraudulantly filled in hours of training because it would help him to get the required hours and he could get his flight hours and get his private and/or commercial helicopter’s license. he told me that he had TWO log books, but I’m not sure WHY that was necessary and I didn’t ask (by that time I instinctively knew when i would get word salad and just stopped asking so I didn’t have to experience it.)
Anyway, I KNOW that he convinced Ben, who was a minister in his church to COMMIT FRAUD FOR HIM. I believe that, at some point, Ben said NO MORE. Ben also flew the Augusta helicopter for the Airlift Northwest. He was an accomplished pilot, not an idiot.
One day Ben was giving some guy a lesson in a Robinson R22. apparently the door just opened up and flew straight into the rotor blades. DEAD.
Spath always seemed to know EXACTLY what caused the deaths of all these “friends”. In Ben’s case, the Cotter pin was put in UPSIDE DOWN on the door and it slipped out so the door was free to fly away, up into the rotor blades. I’m not sure I remember correctly but that is how I recall him explaining it. Everytime someone died in an aircraft related accident, he walked right alongside the NTSB “investigating” the accident. He would come home and tell me all about it.
I remember with Austin, the guy who actually owned the helicopter that he ended up with, Spath told me that he had to “make sure the NTSB understood that only a heart attack could have caused this accident” makes me sick to think about it.
Anyway, I digress. My point is this. Ben knew right from wrong. He was a pastor with 6 kids, beloved by his community and committed to helping by working for the Helicopter Emergency Airlift unit.
I KNOW that spath convinced him that BLACK WAS WHITE.
He did this (I’m convinced) by using the pity ploy: “Ben, what is the GREATER GOOD? following some stupid rules and regulations or helping a FELLOW HUMAN BEING who has tried SO HARD but failed due to dyslexia and other human failings? Laws are a noose around the neck of good humans who just want to SURVIVE. If you could help me, give me a hand UP, NOT a hand OUT, I could become a success…isn’t that what GOD WANTS? BLAH, BLAH BLAH BLAH, BLAH BLAH AD NAUSEUM PASS THE MOTHER FUCKINGBARFFUCKING BAG. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
sorry for the cussing, the memories triggered me. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
breathe deep…. okay, I just want to make my point…..
they lie. they are so good at it.
In your post, you make it sound so easy to just do what is right. But the spath can convince us that it isn’t that simple. why is that??
Because: IT ISN’T THAT SIMPLE.
Authoritive organizations are filled with sociopaths.
sociopaths KNOW THAT. They use each other as – what’s the word? – foils? – can’t think of the word right now. It’s the game that car dealers play when they tell you that they would love to give you that price but they have to run it past their manager first. Good cop / Bad cop.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s not black and white where spaths are concerned. we must never forget that they are SATAN.
Dear YesitsMe,
“I have a lot to unpack here, but the only emotional image I have is like one from a movie, of a dark door slowly closing in the distance—.[picture fade]—The End.”
What a visual! Sounds like near-perfect closure to me.
I am so sorry you had to go through the experience of life with a spath. Do take care of YOU and let us know how you’re doing. (((hugs)))
Seriously – In the city where I grew up, if a vehicle is parked in a business parking lot, the business owner can have the vehicle towed after having it ticketed by the police.
Of course, the business owner would have to have a “valid” reason for the ticket. Such as, not a customer or employee owned vehicle.
The towing company will then bring the vehicle to a privately owned impound area. After a period of time (I can’t remember the time-frame, the towing company can legally obtain a new title for the vehicle and SELL it if the owner of the vehicle has not paid the fees involved for 1) towing the illegally parked vehicle and 2) storage for said vehicle.
I’m not sure how this applies to a vehicle with a lien. I also do not know if other localities operate in the same way. I just thought I would share with the hope that it may be helpful.
Sky – oh my dear! I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had such evil in your life. I do hope that you are far far away from it now!! (((hugs)))
Sky,
Even if your X did get someone to “pencil in” his flight hours (and the guy would have to be a LICENSED flight instructor) in order for your X-P to fly COMMERCIALLY (which means for pay) he would have had to have had a CHECK RIDE with an FAA instructor/Check ride. There are LOTS OF CHECKS AND BALANCES in the licensing of a COMMERCIAL PILOT.
There are written tests (dyslexia or not) he would have had to have passed in order to get a license of ANY KIND.
There are physical tests he would have had to pass with SPECIAL FAA doctors (not just any doctor) and those tests have to be done every year at least (depending on what he is flying, sometimes every 3-6 months)
If he was flying “commercially” in helicopters (in other words for pay) he either had a REAL LICENSE or he was breaking the law.
Also, I think you told me that these helicopters were “experimentals” in other words, “home-made”–which WOULD depending on WHEN he was flying them (the laws have recently changed some) might have allowed him to fly them on a “sport license” which is for small, home made planes under a certain weight that can only go within a 50 mile radius.
As far as cotter pins being in upside down (I assume you are insinuating that he did this on purpose) and him being with the NTSB when it was investigated—let me assure you. #1, it is not the NTSB that DOES the investigating, it is the FAA who does the investigating, collects the evidence and then turns it over to the NTSB—-they are NOT GOING TO BE INFLUENCED by your X at the investigation, believe me they will tell him to GET AWAY SIR—and if that doesn’t work it is Please step aside sir, right outside that yellow tape, and if that doesn’t work, “Sir, you are under arrest for interfering with an investigation
He may have told you all that carp about how HE convinced them of this or that, but HE WAS LYING TO YOU.
We have had two major wrecks here, the one that killed my husband and another one where a pilot crashed and destroyed a plane he had just bought from us (no one was seriously injured) but we had two full-fledged investigations here that I was able to observe, and believe me NO ONE interfered with those investigators. They were totally professional and totally knew what they were doing
Keep in mind, Sky, “he IS the lie.” So you can’t believe much he told you, I think he liked pulling your chain and talking tough and making you think he knew more than he did and that he could get others to fake things for him. It made him feel like a big shot…but I think 2/3 of what he told you were lies about his flying. How would you know they weren’t? Made him feel like a big shot to lie to you and get away with it.
Oxy,
the spath began flying ultralights. then he began building experimentals and worked on designing the line so he got to know the company’s customers. Austin was a customer whom he befriended. I knew Austin. Spath convinced Austin to buy a real helicopter, an R22. Then spath had it signed over to him. Then Austin died in the gyrocopter which was an experimental, which spath designed and built and maintained.
Spath got his medical renewed every year. This was to convince people that he really was trying to get his license, (also to get another hundred bucks out of me) this was one of his “props”. He is a superb helicopter pilot. He has trained many people to fly. Rich people. I know, because I watched it happen, not because he told me. He is also an excellent teacher of anything that has to do with mechanics.
He tells everyone the same story about how he just can’t pass the written test. I know because I’ve heard it. I knew Ben. I knew many of his friends. And his friends at the airport know each other. This was one of his compartments.
I was different in that I was privy to knowledge about the compartments and could sometimes enter them momentarily (as a prop) to meet the other actors.
http://www.pprune.org/archive/index.php/t-153754.html
here is an old archive of the accident.
I know for a fact that Ben did give spath a few hours of training, to try to help spath, but then spath convinced him to fill in more hours in the log book. I mean, you know, what’s the harm, right? because after all Ben knew that spath was a better pilot than even Ben was. The issue was not whether Spath could fly, it was that whole irrelevant paper and pencil thing – and spelling too. So unfair.
I’m sure you are right oxy that it was the FAA, it’s been years and I didn’t pay too much attention. But I do know that he could convince FAA investigators to chat with him. In fact, years earlier, he made friends with a FAA guy and the guy gave him an FAA hat. Which he wore all the time. One day, my parents and I were heading to Chicago for a wedding and the spath went to the airport and was waiting with us. This was around 1998. The plane was delayed. Everyone who went to ask at the counter, was treated like cattle and told to be patient. Spath went up there with his FAA hat. Spath looked like a homeless bum, but with that FAA hat, the woman began kissing his ass, giving him all the details of the problem. (something in the stabilizer had malfunctioned and they had to replace it) I WATCHED THIS HAPPEN. I have seen him do this with my own eyes so many times. He puts on a mantle of authority and people defer to his superior knowledge, then we would go home and giggle and laugh at how stupid people are. That’s why, I know what he did even when I wasn’t there: because he always did the same things.
In regard to Ben and the log books. I SAW them all filled out. I know that spath didn’t pay for all those hours. But spath told me that he had gotten duplicate log books. So he could show whichever was most convenient at the time. But I didn’t get why he did that and what the con was – I still don’t.
But before I left spath, I found a stash of things he kept in the RV. The log books, things pertaining to his dealings with Austin (bill of sale for the R22 and other stuff) and pictures of me. He was getting ready to “suicide” me and make his escape, so he was setting up for his new life. When I left him, I went back two days later and saw that all the food was gone from the fridge and that stash in the RV was gone too.
The pin in the door being the problem was commonly known around the airport. I went to the funeral. I spoke with all his friends. It wasn’t just his word I’m relying on (HAHAHAHAHA THAT WOULD BE A JOKE). Although it IS possible that he told so many people about the cotter pin that it BECAME truth. But i doubt it. Spath spent ALL his time thinking and talking about how accidents kill people who aren’t as careful as he is. He would point to parts on the copter and say “that part has this weakness etc… this is how it could kill me. blah blah blah”
At the time, I thought he was always being very careful and smart about his safety. Later, I thought that he did it to keep me afraid – which in part, was true. It’s very nerve wracking to constantly hear all the ways fires can start and brakes can fail and aircraft can fall out of the sky. it really was a never ending stream of doom and gloom.
Now I understand that it was him “planning out loud”. A tell.
I’m sure that the report is out there. You are welcome to research it if you care. Ben is dead, I can’t bring him back.
When spath plans a kill, the first thing he does is infiltrate the authority in charge of investigating. In my case, before I ever moved to the island, he had already made buddies out of the cops there. In seattle, he has my spath trojan horse as a cop, who now works for homeland security. He had a friend in the FAA that he hung with. (who also knew spath had no license) He had a friend who was a retired US Marshall, (an eraser, who helps people hide in the witness protection program).
Oxy, spath doesn’t just spath wildly. He plans his schemes for years and even decades, moving slowly into position, but the first step is always to infiltrate authorities.
Here is the NTSB information from their official web site, but it does NOT contain the name of the pilot or the student, and the “full narrative” is not “available” (and clickable on this one) like it is on the report about the crash that killed my husband.
This one seems to indicate that the door pins were NOT in place on that door (and that could mean they fell out) Since on a REGULAR plane (helicopter or fixed wing either) a CERTIFIED mechanic (A&P) AND a CERTIFIED Aircraft inspector (AI) would have had to SIGN OFF on this plane, Springer’s family could/should have sued who ever said they worked on and inspected this plane as SAFE FOR FLIGHT. If your X tampered with this and told you he did, I suggest that you contact the FAA or the NTSB and talk to them about this—if not, and you actually have a confession from him that he killed or caused someone to die, and you don’t report it, then where does that leave you morally when he kills the next one? It may be only “your word against his” but if you talk to them they WILL investigate and there is no statute on the crime of murder.
