Contrary to a prevailing myth, sociopaths are really no smarter than the average individual”¦probably dumber. Sure, a good one can dupe you, but as I’ve written elswhere, this is no great shakes, as most of us can dupe each other if that’s our goal.
That’s because we enter relationships risking trust and faith in each other, which makes the exploitation of our trust and faith really easy. It takes no genius or particularly smart, crafty person to exploit this trust and faith. It’s as easy to do as it’s wrong.
And so, most sociopaths aren’t really that clever, or ingeniously bright. Most make messes not only of others’ lives, but their own too. Many end up in jail, and those who don’t are often finding trouble in other areas, exercising poor judgement all over the map, squandering friendships, family, and all sorts of meaningful opportunities.
By most standards of a successful life, sociopaths live lives of abject failure, accomplishing little more, at the end of the day, than having produced plenty of havoc and pain. None of this indicates that, as a group, sociopaths are smart.
Sometimes the media sensationalizes the sociopath as the dark, brilliantly predatory monster, especially in classic cases of psychopaths like Ted Bundy. But Ted Bundy wasn’t so smart. In the end, he was nothing but a vicious, sadistic murderer who managed to lure young, naïve girls sufficiently into his proximity to then viciously murder them.
How much of an accomplishment was this? To be able to lure naïve girls near enough to his car to then kidnap and kill them? Otherwise, OJ Simpson style, Bundy was ambushing dormitories at night and butchering innocent, sleeping college kids. Not exactly a genius, or courageous guy, at work here. Just a perverse, murderously violent, cowardly man.
Sure, Bundy was reputedly charming and articulate (video of him bears this out). But this didn’t make him “smart.” He was, clearly, adept at “masking” himself. But again, effective maskers aren’t smart; they’re just good maskers. And nonsociopaths routinely are good maskers.
Good masking, good self-disguising is a type of social skill, and not the purview of sociopaths exclusively. Also, many sociopaths are terrible maskers, just as many nonsociopaths are.
My point is that the “mask” is not an indication of “smartness.” It’s merely the case that some sociopaths, and some nonsociopaths, can mask aspects of themselves and their agendas effectively; but bear in mind, just as many do this very poorly.
In the end, sociopaths, as a group, have a poor track record of living effective lives. Rather, they live disruptive, unsatisfying lives”¦fraught with pathological attitudes and empathic deficits that bring misery to others and, correspondingly, much trouble and, at best, empty satisfaction, to themselves.
Sociopaths simply are not successful people. They may (or may not) skate along under the radar for some stretch of time, but this is not a “game” that smart people play, and that smart people get off on.
Only dumb people play this game. Only really dumb people live this way. Only really really dumb people derive satisfaction, for however long they can swing it, from pulling the wool over others’ eyes.
It’s just no great shakes to do this, and it doesn’t make you smart.
..
Constantine,
yep and everyone who knows my spath thinks he’s a loveable guy…
Only my BF knows and “gets” the magnitude of his evil.
The mask. It’s all about the mask.
Constantine:
Well, Paterno did report it, but he didn’t report it to authorities and he didn’t follow up. I don’t know what to think to tell you the truth. I also haven’t heard enough to say…

Constantine,
I DISAGREE with you 110% on the “level of guilt”—anyone who even suspects **SUSPECTS***a child is being abused and does not contact POLICE is guilty in my view of what happens after that. If the perp does more crimes because he was not reported, then the person who did not report should be tried as an accomplice in my not so humble opinion.

Paterno? I’m stuck wondering wtf the guy who WITNESSed the 10yr old boy being buggered and did NOT STOP it. He reported it? I’m old and fat and I still could kick the MF balls into orbit if I WITNESSED that. THEN I’d call 911 and that’s the report I’d make.
Understand Paterno was “reported” to again and again and he PROTECTED the a*.
Constantine, the “good old boys” system is “alive and well” in most schools, churches, businesses, politics etc. and it really frustrates me that people turn such a blind eye to CRIMINAL behavior. When we had the pedophile in our living history group, he got out of prison and went right back to working with kids, got a paying job at the museum (they didn’t know he was on parole or what for, didn’t check!) and when I went to his boss at the museum, BINGO he lost his job! Then when I went to the board of directors of the group, the president, who I suspect frankly is a wife beating psychopath, but at least a high level narcissist, said “Oh, he’s paid his debt to society, we can’t kick him out of our group!” DUH???? Well, fortunately, the women on the board were behind me and he got kicked out….but he went on finding unsuspecting orgs that work with kids to get paying jobs, and I kept sending them “public information” and he kept losing jobs…but you can’t believe how many guys in our group thought I was BEING UNREASONABLE AND A BIATCH. Well, so what!
I got elected to the board of directors of our group and for two years, I made life tough for the president and his private kingdom of control. He also didn’t think it was a “big deal” when his buddy pointed a gun at me as a “joke.” I prosecuted the man for terroristic threatening and informed him that if he ever pointed at gun at me, loaded or unloaded, the one I pointed back WOULD BE LOADED. This is the same guy that got found out he was living in the house with his mother’s dead body for over two weeks when the neighbors smelled the stink. He has dropped out of sight since then. I found out at his court hearing about the pointing the gun at me as a “joke” that he had several minor criminal convictions for assault and drugs as well.
I believe that if people would SAY SOMETHING about the abuse or even suspected abuse that they witness there would be something done about more of it before it leads to death or dismemberment.
Back when I was a student, and doing my preceptorship with a family physician a kid came in the clinic and he had OBVIOUS bruises from what appeared to be being whipped with an electric cord folded up into a loop. I talked to the doctor about it and wanted to report it (which is and was the law) and he told me NO, THAT I COULD NOT REPORT IT. I have felt guilty ever since that day because I did NOT report it. I didn’t have the guts to report it and put myself in a bind with the doctor and or the school. I WILL ALWAYS BE ASHAMED of that decision. I promised myself I will never be guilty of that kind of decision again.
YES Oxy,
Just read your post. Anyone who witnesses a CHILD being raped and does not call the police is an ACCOMPLICE b/c the crime could not happen without cooperation from the “witness”.
