Research finds brain changes due to PTSD

New research has found a specific change in brain chemistry due to trauma. An article on Medscape.com says:

“Lower serotonin 1B levels were also strongly associated with age at first trauma. The earlier the trauma exposure, the greater the brain alterations and the greater the severity of PTSD symptoms, and the greater the risk of developing comorbidities,” senior author Alexander Neumeister, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, told Medscape Medical News.

“These findings establish that trauma at a young age causes long-lasting neurobiological and psychological effects in survivors with PTSD. In other words, early-life trauma can interfere with normal brain development,” he said.

The article is somewhat technical, but lay readers like us can pretty much follow what is being discussed. To read the story, you need to register for Medscape.com, which is free.

    KatyDid,

Thyroid tests are not that expesnsive and you can have a basic thyrid test for a few bucks…..call and ask a family doctor what the cost is for jsut a thyroid basic test costs. The medication is cheap as well….and it is a very important hormone, might make a BIG difference in your life and how you feel and think!

Will do Oxy. The dr visit is $110. I was told a basic test was not sensitive enough and to ask for some specific test.

I do have other issues and I have been trying so many things to get to feeling strong and AWAKE. And to be honest, I am bad about eating. I am not supposed to have coffee but when I feel like I can’t seem to get my day going, the coffee helps get me out of bed.

wish I were ILLEGAL and this would all be done for free….

    Oxy and Katy,
the basic tests are fine but they don’t catch all the subclinical results that the specialists can. These are TSH tests which will challenge your ability to produce T4.

I’m not big on conventional meds but the tests are the best part about allopathic doctors. Lots of data comes from the thyroid specialists’ tests. Taking the meds gave me so much feed back. It was invaluable. Now I know the difference between how I felt with thyroid hormone in my system vs. very low thyroid. If I choose to use alternative meds, at least I know what feelings to shoot for.

I truly believe that spaths cause auto immune diseases, especially the thyroid diseases. The stress of being with them is off the charts.

I was unaware of what stress felt like, (just like Erin said) because it was second nature to me, from being raised by spaths. Taking the thyroid meds, gave me a new insight. Maybe I’ll never be normal but at least I will know what normal feels like.

MY MIND CAN TELL MY BODY… TO BE HAPPY BUT GUESS WHAT!!! ???? That carp don’t work when you have a physical dysfunction that makes everything in your body not work properly and it leaves you with a poisoned feeling. Sorry….. mental comes after physical!!! When my body feels good… I am able to do anything physicaly and mentally!!!
I wake up feeling well and there is no stopping me… like today!!! No brain fog, no vertigo, no nausea…. with only one little pill called synthroid. Everything else is over the counter suppliments that my body needs temporarily because it quit working properly due to the thyroid. Not a bag of rainbow colored M&M’s of psyc meds! That messes with the chemicals in your BRAIN!! I won’t play “mad scientist” with my brain! I love my brain! It told me to go see my GP and find out what was wrong!!!!

KatyD, you can do to Mexico and have them done cheaper if you live closer to the border. Or call around and see if you can find a “free clinic” that will do it, or a nurse practitioner run clinic. Good luck! (((hugs)))

Did ya see the news story on the man who pretended he was illegal so he wouldn’t have to do jail time? Think it happened in Co. They deported him to Mx. He got a tan, drank a couple of margaritas and returned to USA. Stupid idiot got picked up again…

But I do notice, the illegals get free medical care. I wouldn’t mind paying a fair price but as a cash paying customer, I get to pay FULL fare b/c they have to make up for what they give away by charging the “rich”, that is those paying with cash b/c they know darn good and well that the ‘rich” are not coming to their damn lowclass clinic.
