A sociopath is someone who has a pervasive and persistent disregard for the rights and feelings of others. This disregard is manifested in the antisocial behavior sociopaths show. While we usually think of antisocial behavior as criminal, not all antisocial acts are illegal. A person who slips up once is not a sociopath. Sociopathy is a lifestyle.
Since humans are designed to live in society, a healthy personality has prosocial inclinations. Therefore, people who are pervasively antisocial are disordered in the sense that they are not the norm (thank God). Although antisocial behaviors are observable actions like lying, stealing and assault, there are personality traits that cause antisocial behavior. It should come as no surprise that people who have a sense of entitlement, over-rate their own greatness and have poor self-control are more likely to hurt others and show pervasive antisocial behavior.
The American Psychiatric Association has defined a group of personality disorders it calls “cluster B”. According to a recent paper* by German psychiatrist, Christian Huchzermeier, M.D., “ The cluster includes disturbances of personality that go hand in hand with emotional dysregulation phenomena, a tendency towards aggressive—impulsive loss of control, egoistic exploitation of interpersonal relationships, and a tendency to overestimate one’s own importance.”
The disorders of “cluster B” go together because what underlies them is a disturbance in three developmentally acquired abilities I have called The Inner Triangle. These abilities are:
Ability to Love
Impulse Control
Moral Reasoning
These abilities that a child gains during development are a triangle because the development of each depends on the other two. A child begins to acquire ability to love in the first year of life, impulse control begins in the second year of life. At two years of age there is already a link between ability to love and impulse control. Children with the best impulse control also are the most loving/empathetic. Moral reasoning begins in the third year of life and its development depends on a loving nature and impulse control. Similarly the most moral kids are also the most loving and self-controlled.
I think of the cluster B disorders as different manifestations of damage to the inner triangle. I think of sociopaths as individuals who completely lack ability to love and have impaired impulse control and moral reasoning.
Given the Inner Triangle, it should come as no surprise that it can be difficult to find people who have only one cluster B personality disorder. For that reason individuals with antisocial personality, narcissistic personality, borderline personality and histrionic personality often have symptoms of the other disorders. If someone gets a diagnosis of only one of these, it doesn’t mean that the person doesn’t also have one or all of the others. The person making the diagnosis simply thought that the one chosen best described the person. You should know there is a gender bias in diagnosis such that women are often labeled “borderline.” These women can also be sociopaths who leave a trail of victimized friends, lovers and children in their wakes.
A recent study reported in Behavioral Science and the Law, “The Relationship Between DSM-IV Cluster B Personality Disorders and Psychopathy According to Hare’s Criteria: Clarification and Resolution of Previous Contradictions” examines the relationship between psychopathic personality traits as defined by the screening version of the PCL and Cluster B personality disorders. The authors of this study were careful to examine people who had only one cluster B disorder. They found psychopathy to be associated with all cluster B disorders.
The authors conclude:
“One clinical implication of our results, nevertheless, is that in cases where a cluster B personality disorder is diagnosed a high psychopathy value is to be expected, especially where antisocial, borderline or narcissistic personality disorder is involved. The PCL score is a better predictor of subsequent events, such as problems during (criminal) custody or a relapse into delinquency, than a diagnosis of a DSM-IV personality disorder, especially in forensic populations; therefore, an additional investigation with the PCL should be carried out, if a cluster B personality disorder has been diagnosed.”
It is important for Lovefraud readers to be aware of this study especially if there is a divorce/custody proceeding or a cluster B personality disorder has been diagnosed. Many people might think that if the partner has been “diagnosed borderline” or “diagnosed narcissistic” that means the partner is not a psychopath/sociopath. This study suggests otherwise. IF YOU ARE INVOLVED WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS THESE YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THEIR HARMFUL BEHAVIOR AS AN INDICATION OF PSYCHOPATHY/SOCIOPATHY. There are some people with cluster B, histrionic, borderline and narcissistic disorders who are not highly antisocial. But if the person is lying, cheating and manipulating, that is antisocial behavior. This behavior in the context of any cluster B means the person is potentially very dangerous. As the authors state:
“Screening for PCL-based psychopathy can also be important for general psychiatric patients with a DSM-IV personality disorder, so that potential difficulties in the course of their treatment can be anticipated and this comorbidity can be targeted in the planning of therapy. Patients with both a DSM-IV personality disorder and PCL-based psychopathy can exhibit behavior that is particularly dangerous to therapy (Stafford & Cornell, 2003).”
If you have been diagnosed with borderline personality and reading this frightens you, I am sorry. You can improve by working on your inner triangle. Talk to your therapist about DBT a treatment that is very effective in improving the state of the Inner Triangle in people who are motivated to do it.

Jim:
I have to defend those who have been in public service, since I’ve been in it myself. I think it’s like any other profession — you get the good and the bad. Some are just there to punch a clock and collect a pension, and others actually believe in what they do.
I lead criminal prosecutions against banks and individuals who defrauded elderly investors, laudered money and other financial crimes. I’m proud of the work I did then. And based on the less than stellar examples of public service we saw under George Bush, I’d say that the federal and state prosecutors are about to get very busy again, to say nothing of the enforcement actions the agencies will be bringing.
Regarding his “tax evasion” claim, I have to agree with OxDrover. My last case I handled was a guy who owed over 5 million in back taxes. We cut a deal to cut the tax burden and the guy is serving 6 months in a minimum security federal prison. So, I’m a bit skeptical on your freind’s claim.
Well, Oxy…re “my friend/acquaintance:
There is a federal prison site/prisoner locater on-line now. Found him by name, age may right…if him, released in 1991.
Does’t give offense details, though. Site for federal prisoners goes back to 1982 now.
Nothing in state d.o.c base.
And he’s already formed an LLC corp to act as a consultant for legal services LOL
I’ll ask him if I run into him exactly what the federal offense was…when I google my name and state I don’t get 42,000 “hits”….and the first 3 pages are all really him…
Interesting guy. Has gone nationwide as a child advocacy expert.
I’ll let you know on the offense if I nail it down.
Actually, if you read some of his stuff, it’s really pretty good…explanations of civil vs criminal, etc. Pretty sensible, useful information.
Matt, you and I posted at the same time.
I don’t dismiss yours and Oxy’s points about the claims of tax evasion, just his age and timeline wouldn’t make sense. I have a federal prison registration number now, and should be able to verify if it’s him and the offense….
I agree about the need for busy financial fraud prosecutors.
I look at the SEC and USDoJ sites about once a week. Lot of “consent decrees” and fines of millions to the financials in the news everyday getting billions of taxpayer dollars.
Citigroup, BofA, UBS…agreements to buy back billions in auction rate securities.
See AIG today. Look at a case December, 2004, I think…AIG and PNC paid about $115 million in fines…conspiring to move bank assets “off book”. Think they stopped?
I think AIG Financial Services was floating $300 billion of credit default swaps when the collapse started…and they were on the wrong side of them. So now we’re bailing them out…let’s see….$152.5/157.5 bil plus another $30 bil this week.
We’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg, or black hole.
We live in interesting times…..
And…I’m not gonna date the guy. Off the current events…lot of people here need support…Truebeliever on another thread…I guess that’s why we’re really here…to heal.
Jim,
I realize you weren’t gonna “date the guy” ROTFLMAO but his claim to be in federal prison for “tax evasion” really was an ORANGE FLAG for me more than just a yellow one. (Not quite RED but pretty close) Thanks for backing me up on that one Matt!
The federal court house where he was convicted should be able to supply you with his conviction and sentencing information. I can’t remember the name of the form but it is only like one page but gives the crime(s) and sentencing. I would be “interested” in knowing, just for curosity’s sake just what it is. I bett’ya a nickle to a hole in a dougnut that Matt and I are right that it is MORE than Tax evasion, though tax evasion may be included.
Being a “crusader” is not bad at all….here again, I have been a crusader at times too. Got elected to the board of directors of my living history group because our president is an N and I am not sure a P as well. He was the one who didn’t want to “persecute” the kiddie porn convicted guy who had rejoined after he got out of prison. Sheesh!
He also didn’t think it was “more than a joke” when a P in our group who was anti-gay and anti-women pointed a GUN (albeit an unloaded one) at me as a JOKE and at some gay guys in a park we were setup in doing demos…I FILED CRIINAL CHARGES AGAINST THE GUY for doing it. So, yea, I have been a crusader at times too. I’m a testy old bat when I think I have a need/right to be and can stand my ground with any other “cornered mama badger.” LOL
Which, is so funny, really, that with people outside my family I have always been able to set boundaries and to enforce them. I have fought crooked hospital administrators, incompetent physicians, unethical physicians, garnered enough support to get them dragged kicking and screaming to the hospital ethics boards, etc. and yet, can’t set (until recently) a boundary with my “loved ones.”
I even got to set a boundary this morning with some close friends who wanted my sons to do a “favor” for them that was beyond an imposition….WAY BEYOND! And I said “NOPE! Not even a chance. YOUR PROBLEM.”
Now repeat after me, gang. “Poor planning on your part, does NOT constitute an emergency on my part.”
Oxy-that red/orange flag may be fiction on his part…I’ll find out. And I kinda figured you for a “righteous” crusade or two.
Matt…I didn’t know you’d been in guberment employ…I think they need you back, now more than ever, with some real power….I think you’re “straight”-personally and legally (bad pun)
We have a local problem here, no reflection on others right now…but…by the way…I saw some documents…”my friend” knew about the 15 year old…there was an incident with an assistant principal at her public school. (sexual–school official left town, too) “My friend”, and her parents, wouldn’t let them “sweep it under the rug”…the a local judge (now out of town on “leave”} issued an order, over the parents objection, and restrained “my friend” from “talking to her” and court-ordered her out of her public school into the local church-run home/private school…where she ended up the alleged victim of “sexual misconduct with a minor” allegedly perped by a school employee. That case is being tried two counties away…where she was found. Never was in the local paper…just indianapolis and the employee’s home town…just a little more perspective on local justice…I’ll drop the subject, now.
Jim
The porno-pervert that went to federal prison was a STATE PARKS EMPLOYEE and his conviction was HUSHED UP by the park because he was hired to WORK WITH KIDS THERE. He was never convicted of touching one but I have my suspicions. Every job he has had or tried to get has been working with kids since he was released from prison. What gets me is that he works now with 4-H kids and he has a convicted background–DO THESE ORGANIZATIONS NOT DO A BACK GROUND CHECK? He is a paid employee of 4-H, but keeps moving to different places in working with them. Every time we get him run off at one place he surfaces at another one. I think he has finally figured out we were using the internet to track him and we haven’t seen anything posted on him in a while.
His wife is a school teacher and she STAYED WITH HIM during and since the conviction, so my guess is that she is eoither in the FOG or she is also a perp. No “healthy” woman would stay with such a creep! Let my husband (if Ihad one) get convicted for kiddie porn and see how quickly I would file for DIVORCE! If I was the one who caught him, he would call the police to turn himself in to get away from ME! Keep in mind I am EXPERIENCED in turning bulls into steers!
In fact, reminds me of a case here iin ARkansas where a rapist had that very thing happen to him. The people who did it were never caught, but the rapist used that as a pity ploy to finally get released from prison on parole, and within a MONTH HE HAD RAPED AND KILLED ANOTHER GIRL. (BTW it was NOT me that did it! LOL)
Jim:
Oddly enough, I am checking out the government sector. I think that’s going to be quite the place to be for the foreseeable future.
Being from Louisiana originally I am well-versed in “local justice.”
The things that are being exposed these days truly make my stomach churn — like the scandal in Pennsylvania where the two judges were getting kickbacks from the private operators of juvenile facilities for dach minor they sentenced to the facility. The were busy sentencing first-time, misdemeanor juvenile offenders, to these facilities. Or all the mini-Madoffs who are popping up.
I look at all these cases and think “SOCIOPATHS.’
I was listening to a commentator the other night and he said this disintegration in our society — financially, legally, etc can be traced back to Ronald Reagan. I have to agree.
I look at the so-called progression of “financial deregulation” and see how we went from the S&L bust, to the LBO bust, to Long Term Capital’s bust, to the current melt-down and think that the staggering sense of entitlement of our so-called political leaders and our so-called titans of industry is truly indicative that the sociopaths have been running the asylum.
I truly do believe that if this nation didn’t have a middle-class — as tattered as it is at the moment, we would probably have a revolution which would make the French, Russians and Cubans look minor in comparison.
Hi Everyone – Thank you ALL for your help, support, and words of advice. It’s been quite a trying experience, something NO ONE in my family has ever experienced. I’ve done about all I can do as far as taking care of my end…the rest is up to God and the law. As of yesterday, the police haven’t assigned a detective to my case yet – I DID talk to a detective yesterday who said he will probably be the one assigned to the case, most likely this week. As far as my stuff is, well, I consider it all history at this point. At least I’m alive, safe, and still in hiding. Back to work today – with 100% protection from everyone here. I have my puppy with me, too…thank God he didn’t hurt her when he robbed me! My puppy is now with me 24/7 – joined at the hip. Hopefully, they will arrest him this week…I don’t know if I’ll EVER feel comfortable in my house again…I feel so violated! My court date is coming up at the end of March for the restraining order….who knows? If he has been arrested by then, he may show up in court in shackles! Anyway, I’ve done all I can for now – it’s the waiting game and that sucks! I will keep you all posted as best as I can as long as I have access to a computer somewhere. Love to all of you….DJ
Dear DJ,
WELCOME BACK! GLAD to hear you are doing as well as you are. I know that “raped” feeling, “violated” feeling when your house is robbed, and ESPECIALLY when you know it was someone who hates you, not just a “random” robbery!
Glad your puppy is safe too, and that you are safe. I can’t believe how LONG it is before you can get a hearing, but don’t expect him to respect even a restraining order! He is “above” the law, you know!!! In HIS mind anyway. Hopefully some detective will get involved SOONER rather than later and get some EVIDENCE before he destroys it all.
I’m glad that you are taking such a view of your “stuff” too as that is probably reality-based, though I am sure it must rankle you to no end. KEEP SAFE!!!! and come here as often as you can and keep us updated. If not you, maybe NikNak can update us, thank you for having her do that, BTW, at least we were inside the loop. ((((hugs))))) and prayers for your safety!
