Editor’s note: The Lovefraud reader who posts as “Shocknawe” posted information in a comment about the physical condition of adrenal fatigue. I invited him to write a full blog post on the topic. Please remember that Lovefraud is not a medical resource, and if you are suffering from symptoms like those discussed below you should consult a doctor.
How to recover from adrenal fatigue
By Shocknawe
As victims of psycho/sociopaths, we know all too well the damage inflicted upon us. But I discovered that the toll taken has an additional component one that, left untreated, can set our progress towards recovery back by months and even years. The good news, however, is that we can take some simple steps to speed our recovery and take control of our lives again.
First, some background on my situation. I married a sociopath. It hurts even to write those words. Among her many deceits, one was that she was an expert on holistic health specifically diet. Since I’d revealed early on that I was into an organic lifestyle, she created her “expertise” on the spot and sold me as an authority on the subject. Her form of gas-lighting took the form of convincing me that everything I thought I knew about the body was wrong and that she and only she was capable of bringing about a state of perfect health.
So no surprise that by the time she was done with me, my health had already suffered to a visible extent (friends were commenting on how ghastly I looked). The shock of discovery triggered in me a cascading series of health-related problems that incapacitated me for some time.
The following list of symptoms of victims of sociopathic predation is not mine, but rather an outline of behaviors generally regarded as common:
- Emotional paralysis
- PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)
- Suicidal thoughts or actions
- Loss of interest in life
- Loss of energy
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Anxiety
- Depression or severe depression
- Numbing of feelings
- Disinterest in having a relationship (platonic or sexual)
- Panic attacks
- Irritability
- Increased anxiety from being alone
- Increased anxiety from being in crowds
- Mood swings
I experienced all the above symptoms. I ate one half teaspoon of peanut butter, and barely kept that down. I drank copious amounts of water and hardly slept for five weeks. That led to a collapse of my immune system and I was hospitalized for pneumonia, had three surgeries on my eye for a fully detached retina brought on, the doctors said, by stress. I lost 25 pounds and I was lean to begin with. I was prescribed antidepressants.
Once I started climbing out of the acute depression stage I set about trying to diagnose my symptoms and begin building my strength back. My first stop was to my old Chinese acupuncturist, whom I’d stopped seeing when I put myself in the sure hands of my ”˜loving’ wife. After examination he said, “You need to go immediately to the grocery store and buy a steak; you’re in the first stages of renal failure and could experience a heart attack at any hour.”
Renal failure, or kidney failure, is defined as a medical condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter toxins and waste products from the blood. I had become anemic (low red blood cell count) in large part because I hadn’t touched red meat in three years and had entrusted my dietary regimen to the ”˜expert’ over my better judgment.
Now I had something productive to focus on and I began looking into both Western and Eastern approaches to the morphology of kidney disease and “disharmony.” I soon discovered that many of the symptoms I experienced were a result of the huge amounts of cortisol and adrenaline I’d expended in the first weeks of my “shock and awe.”
Meanwhile, as I was reading up on PTSD, depression, and of course, sociopathy, I found that I’d begun craving pasta and sweets of all sorts. Given my depressed state, I gave in to anything that provided even a temporary respite from my pain, and I’d indulged my cravings as often as I cared to which became daily. I don’t drink or take drugs, but I’ve always had a sweet tooth, so I figured, “What’s the harm?” I soon found out.
My research revealed that my adrenal glands, which sit atop our kidneys, were exhausted, and had undoubtedly been struggling for years under the (unconscious) stress of living with a sociopath. Adrenal fatigue, or Non-Addison’s hypoadrenia, is caused by prolonged or severe stress or trauma. The adrenal glands produce the glucocorticoid hormones cortisone, cortisol, aldosterone, androstenedione, adrenaline, norepinephrine and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Adrenaline, DHEA, cortisol and norepinephrine are the body’s four major stress hormones. Imbalances in their production can cause or worsen carbohydrate intolerance. Repeated stresses, no matter what their cause, make a person more prone to adrenal fatigue. The effects of stress are cumulative, even when the stressors are quite different. Here are some of the examples of life events that can lead to adrenal fatigue:
- Unrelieved pressure or frequent crises at work and/ or home
- Any severe emotional trauma
- Death of a close friend or family member
- Major surgery with incomplete recovery or subsequent persistent fatigue
- Prolonged or repeated respiratory infections
- Serious burns including severe sunburn
- Prolonged lack of sleep
- Head trauma
- Job loss
- Sudden change in financial status
- Relocation without support of friends or family
- Repeated or overwhelming chemical exposure (including alcohol and drug abuse)
In addition to the emotional and physical traumas that can produce hypoadrenia, there are chronic conditions or lifestyles that continually drain the adrenals or prevent them from recuperating properly after a trauma. One of the most common chronic factors is poor diet. For example, 62% of North Americans don’t eat even one vegetable per day. Fast foods don’t have the necessary nutrients we need, and if you’re eating mostly processed foods you can be sure your adrenal glands are not getting the nutrients they need to function optimally under normal circumstances, never mind responding sufficiently in a crisis. Adrenal fatigue is becoming much more common as our society assumes long work hours and high stress levels as a normal part of life. Over-eating carbohydrates, especially simple sugars and refined starches, is itself a cause of adrenal stress and fatigue and can only exacerbate the condition.
Since I was anemic and needed to eat red meat, I chose to start with the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet begins with a radical departure from the normal balanced meal: total elimination of all carbohydrates for two weeks — including even complex carbs like vegetables. This gives the adrenals a ”˜breather’, taking pressure off them so they can begin the process of recovery. I also recommend Adrenal Fatigue The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, by James L. Wilson, ND, DC, PhD., which outlines the causes, types and symptoms of adrenal fatigue and offers comprehensive approaches to functional restoration.
An adrenal fatigue diet of lower carbs and the elimination of all other stimulants is critical in order to allow the adrenal glands to rest and recover. The extreme demands placed on the body during times of stress require nothing less than total dedication to healthy nutrition. The following is a list of recommended nutrients to assist in adrenal support and recovery:
- High quality (preferably a whole food) multivitamin/ mineral complex
- Vitamin B Complex — 100 mg with additional Pantothenic acid (B5) twice daily
- Vitamin C — 4,000 – 10,000 mg daily
- Raw liver extract
- Coenzyme A
- Coenzyme Q10
- Magnesium — at bedtime
- L-Tyrosine — at bedtime
- Vitamin B12 — sublingual at bedtime
- Zinc lozenges
- Astragalus — if taking tincture, use a non-alcohol base brand
- Aswaganda — if taking tincture, use a non-alcohol base brand
- Milk thistle
- Siberian ginseng
Here are more tips:
- Get adequate protein in your diet. If possible, red meat should be grass fed, antibiotic and hormone-free your adrenals don’t need to be battling those substances while trying to regain their health. Fried foods should be avoided. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables especially leafy greens.
- Stay away from sweets, alcohol and tobacco, which put tremendous stress on the adrenals and are addictive. Avoid coffee even decaffeinated coffee as it’s toxic to the adrenal glands.
- If your blood pressure is low, increase your intake of salt Himalayan or sea salt is best.
- Exercise as much as possible, in whatever form will get you active the most.
- And finally, remove as many stressful people and situations from your life as you can; yoga and meditation can greatly help mitigate the stresses you are forced to cope with and add to your peace of mind.
As the body goes, so goes the mind; or: garbage in, garbage out. If you want to give yourself the best chance of recovery from the awful ravages of sociopathic abuse, you owe it to yourself to restore your adrenals and nurture your health as best you can.
Constantine~ I can surely understand being spooked by the “garbage can incident”. Thank goodness it, whatever it is, was just letting you know it was there.
My husband and I have had several strange experiences. A collection of “Garfield” stuffed toys were sitting displayed on top of a cabinet for several weeks. One night, while sitting in the next room watching a movie, about 4 of them flew off of the cabinet. We did not see it happen, but heard the soft “thump” of them hitting the floor. One was about 4 feet away from where it had been sitting. Yes, it’s weird, but no harm done. 🙂 A couple of times, a photograph had been placed face down on the shelf where it sat. Yes, it was the same photo both times. That one kind of bothers me, since it is a photo of my stepson…

Wow TB ~ It seems as if you know lots more about what you can and cannot eat than what I do. I really need to read up on this stuff so much more!!
I did look at the rotation diet. It seems like a really great idea to help figure out what causes the troubles and what is OK. However, there’s some stuff on that list that I’ve never even heard of, let alone seen in a grocery store! I suppose substitutions would have to be made.
I was taking flax seed oil, but then I started having nosebleeds from it. They stopped almost immediately after I quit taking it.
I guess we just have to keep a close eye on what we consume and our reactions to it. We’ll get it figured out by helping each other, right?

Dear Louise,
Thanks for sharing the “paper towel dispenser incident” – I’d say that’s fairly creepy too! I think a lot of people have these weird kinds of experiences, but they often keep quiet for fear of “what people will think.” However, one of the (few) positive things about the Internet is that it allows you to see how many other people have undergone the same sorts of things. (This site is a great example of this: Twenty years ago, we would have had no idea how prevalent sociopathy is, except perhaps in an abstract, statistical” kind of way. But here we literally see people being broken and destroyed by them 24/7. – And I think that this “real time” aspect really drives home the fact that “it isn’t just me,” – and that it is actually happening everywhere and all the time.)
So as I’ve said, who knows? If nothing else, it’s a peculiar “fact” that still leaves me rather baffled.
On another subject, I’m sorry that you still feel an irrational pull towards your spath. However, instead of saying “I still miss HIM,” perhaps you might better say, “I still miss the ILLUSION”! It’s a small difference, but how we speak of these things is a significant factor in how we THINK of them.
One other thing. Did you say that your S. actually ran off with the “office-slut,” or did they both end up staying with their “lucky” spouses? I thought you said something about them living in a “million dollar home” (or maybe I should call it a “million dollar spath lair”?), but I forget who was living where!
Anyhow, they are just so pathetic, aren’t they?
Dear Hope2HeaL,
I know what you mean….they inject as much as 60% SALT and WATER into chicken/turkey….it much cheaper than selling MEAT! I lost a freezer this year, along with all the home grown chicken I had put up, and chicken brother I had made and frozen as well. I bought some chicken, but won’t do that again…so I am back to beef until I can raise more chickens. Being PERSONALLY ACQUAINTED with my meat, and knowing what it “died from” is becoming more and more important to me.
I sincerely suggest though for those of you who BREAK OUT in a “rash” with any kind of food ingestion that you get checked by an ALLERGY DOCTOR. True allergic reactions can be DEADLY. I realize that allergy testing is expensive and time consuming, in fact, I just spent an entire morning myself at the allergy doctor’s office getting little micro injections and “itchies” in one arm to determine allergic reactions…but you know, I now know EXACTLY what I am allergic to and what I am NOT allergic to.
H2H: I’ve just had to work so hard at coming back to the level I am now, that I’ve pretty well figured out what I can tolerate. I tell you one thing: soy is BAAAAAAAD! Screws with the hormones. Yeah, rotating food items to keep down reactions is wise. I just react instantly to some things so am too afraid to try some of them. Flax seed…I reacted badly to that too. I’ve found oils are very tricky! Plus, flax seed oil can mess with your hormones too as can borage seed oil and others, especially those that contain gluten. I had nosebleeds from gluten…it’s common. And garlic can cause nosebleeds too as it thins blood. Pumpkin seeds are not known to be serious reactors. But….opposite reactions are common in adrenal fatigue. Boomerang effect.
Ox: I don’t really break out in a serious rash [hives], but I do get one or two blisters sometimes. Itchy skin w/o rash I sometimes get after an immune response. Lip swelling or throat swelling is something that does scare me and if I have that…I’m dialing 911! Thanks!!!!! [I don’t have insurance now-lost that too after the divorce. My $$ went to about 1/3 what I had before. Oh well….]
Dear Hope 2 Heal,
Haha- I didn’t see your post there, but that sort of makes my point to Louise about how the Internet really narrows the gap between us as far as “statistically improbable occurrences” goes! Garfield, you say? – Wow, that is not so different from what happened to me!
The photo being turned over is likewise eerie, though if it was something “paranormal,” it still sounds more like the category of “mischievous” rather than “overtly hostile.”
Anyhow, thanks for sharing that: The people on this site really have do have a great wealth of “life-experiences”!
Oxy ~ I did have allergy testing done years back when my hands were reacting badly to chemicals used in cosmetology. I was in school at the time and had to take a leave of absence so that my skin could heal. My hands have been extremely sensitive since that time, and it seems that foods can trigger those same type itchy rashes, but only on my hands.
I have never had an anaphylactic sort of reaction. It is similar to the reactions that I have had to contact with things such as vitamin E on my skin.
I would LOVE to have allergy testing done again. However, it’s cost is prohibitive. Our health insurance has a very high deductible, so it really doesn’t help much.
TB: I guess if you want to try something new, I would try just a tiny bit at a time. That way, if you have ANY type of reaction at all, you will know not to eat it.
I’ve got to scoot. My tomato plants need pruning so that the tomatoes get nice and big. 🙂

Constantine ~ what was strange about the photo, the kid was getting into a bit of mischief at the time… I wonder if someone was trying to let us know that??
The child’s mother s/p, is not always forthcoming with such information until the problem has escalated some.
I dunno, pure speculation, but “I do believe in spooks!” lol
A lot of weird things happened to me while I was with my Spath… he would tell me that he could see evil spirits and there was one with me at all time (HIM) — anyhow, he would talk weird in his sleep and would tell me that I would only be safe with him.
I stopped spending nights at his place as he once hit me during his sleep and 2nd incident he was trying to choke me.
I think that they do have a direct connect with the EVIL WORLD since thats were they belong.
Hi Alina: Yes, strange things here too. Got stranger as time went on. “IT” never hit me but it sure has damaged me and it sure has tried to kill me, not counting the heart attack it pushed me into. It is a chicken lily-livered, lying, ugly, deceiful, DEMON FROM HELL. And I am not just saying this to be ‘cute’. I mean it. I believe it.
Yes, I believe they have EVERYTHING to do with the ‘evil world’. And I am not trying to ‘scare’ you but “I” was on my knees, in church, today, splashing Holy Water on myself. Oh yes, I was.
The battle never changes. I said to “IT” once, as I was planning my retreat, couple of years ago: “Life is going to change around us but one thing will never change: I will always love you inside my soul.” I should never had said that because NOW “THAT” is the weapon it uses against me. My affection for “IT”. But what “IT” doesn’t realize is that IT KILLED ANY AFFECTION OR CARE I MAY EVER HAD FOR IT THE MOMENT IT LIED AND DECEIVED AND TRIED TO KILL ME. There is NO ‘coming back’ from that.
Yes, I absolutely believe they have EVERYTHING to do with the ‘dark world’, whether THEY realize it or not. They are no different than the ‘possessed souls from biblical’ times; are they? I prefer to call them what I believe they are: INCUBUS.
The female version: SUCCUBUS. They are the devils minions, like skylar said? I think it was skylar. Forgive me if I am wrong. I have been burning candles and saying prayers, non stop for the past 3 months. I have seen evil with my eyes. I have felt it and tasted it and it slept with me and made me as dirty and as disgusting as it is. But, I can tell you ONE THING it does not have……………….MY SOUL. It will never have a soul because it is a soul less being without emotion. It feels no joy NOR no pain. It just doesn’t. I am convinced of this.
They don’t belong in our world. It was our kindnesses and our caring and our goodness that brought them to us in the first place. It drew them to us like flies on a picnic table. Such easy prey….superficial beings with superficial lives. There is nothing SUBSTANTIVE about them; not really – take a good, long, hard, look….
I need to get to that nap here, sooner or later~!!!
Just had to wind me up, didn’t ya, Alina???!!! 🙂
Love ~ Duped NO MORE!
