If we have recovered enough from past mass killings and felt safe once more, here we are again. An even more heinous massacre, families and a community destroyed for years, even generations to come. Sweet innocent children shot down in a bloody horror, and the adults who tried to protect them. Families who may never recover fully from the devastation of trauma and loss. Generations in Newtown to come that will resonate with it. A community that will perhaps never experience the magic of Christmas again. The children left who now have gone from a safe secure existence to a reality in which terrifying things are not in a distant fairy tale, they are real in whose forming brains are now wired with the moment in which their lives were about to end, and witnessed others’ lives that did end, and the guilt of survival. A nation feeling increasingly that we are never really safe. All of this created in a few short minutes by one disturbed young man.
Notice how the media are looking for “reasons” why Adam Lanza would commit such a horrific act. Was it that there were guns in the house? Did he play too many violent video games? Is he mentally ill? Was he abused or neglected? Some are pointing to gun laws and the mental illness system as faulty, or to the “violence of our culture,” meaning movies and video games desensitizing children to violence. But let’s be honest: you or I or anyone with a conscience can watch violent movies or play violent video games every day for years on end and still never have it in us to harm another person. Indeed, we witness much worse violence on a daily basis in the news much worse because it is real and this does not make us want to go out and kill someone. In the military, in preparing young people to go to war, they deliberately desensitize them to violence. Does this prevent them from experiencing the horror of killing someone in actual experience? Not for anyone with a conscience! They still come back with PTSD and are haunted their whole lives from it.
Perhaps, yes, there should be a heightening of background checks for those who purchase guns, including checking registries for psychiatric wards, and the types of guns available. And, yes, I agree that we have to stop with the worries about family privacy and start screening early on in schools for signs of potential future violence in children, in the hopes of intervening in those children’s lives to prevent future violence.
Make no mistake about it, the mental health system is severely lacking in this country. I worked for years as a supervisor in homes for the chronic mentally ill, then in an outpatient program for those with dual diagnosis, i.e., an addiction and a mental illness. We do not have enough resources and housing for the mentally ill, nor help for families dealing with it. But statistics show that many more mentally ill people kill themselves than in the normal population, while violence is less prevalent among the mentally ill, contrary to myths claiming the opposite. A violent psychotic person is actually a rare thing. Someone who commits violence while in a psychotic break from reality, such as Son of Sam, is quite rare. Also, those with autism or Aspberger’s syndrome, which it is rumored the perpetrator may have had, are not known for violence. While those disorders do have the characteristic, to different degrees, of decreased social skills and connection because of the way their brains are formed, and they do tend to have “meltdowns’ from their nervous system sensitivity, they rarely harm anyone.
Let’s look at the statistics for people who are abused. Probability would suggest that the majority of you reading this have had some form of abuse in your past. The majority of clients I interview have. The statistics for sexual abuse alone are about 1 in 3 or 4 for girls, and about half of that for boys. Then there are the other forms of abuse: ongoing verbal or physical abuse by parents, siblings or others, parental neglect, bullying, the abuse of one parent by another, neighborhood violence — all forms of abuse or trauma. Then there are other factors that can cause vulnerabilities in coping, such as the divorce or death of parents, a mental illness, an autism spectrum disorder, a learning disability causing school failure, the lack of support. But, if I asked a roomful of people if they have experienced one or more of these things, most would raise their hands. How many of those people would go out and harm, never mind kill, someone?
All of the questions the media are asking appear to be confusion and the unfathomability of trying to wrap their minds around such an unspeakable act. My intention here is not to judge Adam Lanza, or the circumstances that may have contributed to his trigger to plan a massacre. But those who have experienced harm of varying degrees by a socio/psychopath (i.e. someone without a conscience) know this for sure: In spite of any “reasons” or precipitating factors that may contribute, the socio/psychopaths’ method to feel good with themselves (i.e. to avoid their pain) at the expense of another person is a choice in destruction.
It comes down to this: Adam Lanza made an evil choice. Once the sick seed was planted and grew in his mind of how he could glorify himself by feeling all-powerful over human life, releasing his rage, and going down in history as committing one of the most notoriously heinous crimes in our nation, apparently nothing was going to stop him. And the rest of us have to live with the fallout of his vile choice forever.
Eralyn, sounds REALLY creepy to me! UG!
His guns were semi-automatics.
Right now the paranoid nut jobs are thinking that Adam was a manchurian candidate. Someone who was programmed (by the psychopathic powers that be), to explode so that the fall out would include more attempts at gun control for the average citizens.
I know this because I know some paranoid nut jobs personally.
While this conspiracy theory is entirely possible, it still wouldn’t make any difference if it WAS true. The problem still is PSYCHOPATHS. It isn’t guns. It’s spaths.
Spaths who want to kill large numbers of people can do so without guns. The 911 terrorists used box cutters to kill over 3000 people. Even worse, that massacre created a culture of control in this country, where we are so afraid that we allow spaths to fondle us and take pictures of our naked bodies. They definitely won that round.
The reactions to spath attacks are all wrong. We don’t need more control, we need more education about spaths.
They call us sheep because they can round us up and get us in a panic so easily. We need to STOP giving them our emotions.
Skylar,
Have you heard the horrid “who’s to blame” big arugment? That single mother is to blame even though her friends say she was a good person.
They are not going to find the fix in a moment. There is a root to these problems and there are issues with horrible parenting, horrible resource issues when you have problems with a child that is raised by even the best of parents but the kid lacks a conscience or has real mental illness, there’s societal issues. The list goes on.
Then what will happen is supply and demand. We’ll see a rash of non-profits open with whatever buzz words in their names to get the “grants” and nobody gets help as nobody follows the money to see if it was even used where we tried anything new!
We seem to make change blindly and suddenly making extreme adjustments when we all know this didn’t happen SUDDENLY but over a lot of time! Suddenly it’s “enough is enough” which I feel is good but a vision of long term solutions would be best. Or all people get mad and defensive with their points of view and we become more divided.
I think that’s why so many people are running out buying guns for fear of an extreme law being put in place instead of a reasonable one. Single mothers are shaking in their shoes as the light shines on them once again especially when you know the facts of the war that’s been waged against them. Then there’s the “prayer in school” must come back from the fundamentalist extremist christians and I believe a little bit of all of it in the right direction will start nudging us out of the problem with a big dose of research and knowledge but not from anyone who will win the lotto with their findings. There should be follow up with each change made and see which ones appear to be helping the most and concentrate on that area more.
Does that make sense to others? It sure makes sense to me but I too have an opinion. 🙂
Hi Eralyn,
I doubt we’ll ever know the truth. If she was a spath, she would have worn a good mask.
If nothing else, we can say she had poor judgement and she paid for it with her life. She is where you and I almost ended up. So she does have my sympathy.
You are right that we’ll see a rush of people trying to make money off this, whether by lobbying for gun laws or by begging for money for mental health. I’ve heard there’s an old spath saying: “never let a good crisis go to waste.” Not sure who said it first…I think it was Dick Cheney.
The scary thing is that the anti-spath movement is already getting infiltrated with spaths. A couple of years ago, the Neuro-Atypical (NA) community got infiltrated by spaths pretending to be NA. It was interesting to read their comments on the NA boards.
It’s already confusing, so the spaths know they can hide under this very convenient mask of the misunderstood Aspie. The thing is, you can be an Aspie and also have a myriad of other personality disorders, including the Anti-social PD.
Here’s a theory on why Adam Lanza massacred those children ”“ Adam was raped by a local, convicted Catholic priest, Fr John Castaldo, when he was 6 years old. http://neilallen76.wordpress.com/2012/12/19/why-adam-lanza-massacred-children-at-sandy-hook-newtown-a-theory/

I think it would serve us, the general public, well to study the phenomenon of the mass murderer as thoroughly as possible.
Seems to me that mass murder occurs due to MULTIPLE, complex factors coalescing together in a “perfect human storm” of devastation. The more we can come to understand about ALL these various factors, from the broadly general to the highly specific, it may be possible to interfere with them coalescing into violence, or at least provide us with some kind of warning system like we have to warn us of killer tornados that are forming.
It seems obvious (to me, anyway) that mass murder has the factors of access to personal transportation plus access to one or more lethal weapons plus some kind of mental illness.
According to one author I’ve read who studies mass murderers, the mental illness most often turns out to be schizophrenia or schizotypal personality disorder. And according to a 2010 study I have only partially read, the conclusion seems to be that the shooters are “grievance collectors” who have sustained a narcissistic injury and feel justified and entitled to enact their fantasies of revenge in real life. Now, who does THAT sound like? Sounds like a psychopath (sociopath/antisocial pd/narcissistic pd) to me.
So, I’m reading all I can about mass murderers, out of fear, I suppose.
“Mother Jones” has also recently posted an article correlating the hard facts about mass murders over the last 40 years or so, organizing the facts into charts and maps. I think this is a valuable effort and I sincerely hope that ALL the individual scientists, psychiatrists, psychologists and agencies that are researching mass murder will share their data with each other so that we can all benefit from a greater understanding of why this happens (so we can reduce its incidence, and protect ourselves better from it.)
Babs, the “perfect storms”–Katrina, Colombine, Sandy Hook….etc. are difficult to predict where and when they will strike. Sometimes we have some advance warning….like a weather report…and we should take immediate precautions to get out of the way of the on coming storm, but many times the “spree killers” or “mass murderers” don’t give us much if any warning.
To try to prevent them all and they are fortunately, RARE, would require that we live inside a fortress.
There are areas more PRONE TO EARTHQUAKES…Los Angeles is one area, but the New Madrid fault area where I live, is also VERY high risk, and there is no way to predict when one will strike. For example the 1811 New Madrid Earth Quake was one of the worst in the history of the modern world. It was over 200 years ago but there is about a 3% chance another one will stroke in the next 50 years.
So what should I do? First off I have earth quake insurance on my home, as regular home owners does not cover earthquakes or flood. I also have supplies of food and water (I also live in a tornado prone area) and other things that I would need in event of a tornado or earthquake. Will that totally keep me safe? No, not at all. But I do have an emergency plan in event of disaster.
I also am at more than “average” risk of being personally attacked because my son who is in prison for murder wants to ave me killed and has already sent one of his ex convict friends to try to accomplish that very thing. So I am well supplied with defenses, in the form of fire arms and security systems in my home, as well as I am doing my best to keep HIM inside a prison cell by protesting his every parole hearing.
I do think that many if not most spree killings or mass murderers are committed by people with “mental problems” which include psychopaths as well as mentally ill and unbalanced people.
In the cases of young men like this who go on “rage” killing sprees, I think it is very difficult to predict what will set one of them off. Or who it will be or when.
I think that Adam’s mother did the best she could to try to control and to educate and condition into society her son, but she was ill equipped to do so, and I don’t think she knew just how ILL EQUIPPED she was. The system let her down when she reached out to the school for help, but I don’t think the system knew how deeply disturbed Adam was either.
I wish I had the answer to our mental health problems in society, and in what will keep us safe from the fortunately rare “perfect storms” that hit us and bring us to our knees in sadness and fear, but I don’t know the answer. As President John Adams said, “the more I read, the more I think, the more I realize I don’t know.” (paraphrased, not an exact quote)
I read about this, it’s one way of eliminating psychopaths from the gene pool. Personality orders/disorders are genetic!

From a Scientific American article on psychopathy:
In a 1976 study anthropologist Jane M. Murphy, then at Harvard University, found that an isolated group of Yupik-speaking Inuits near the Bering Strait had a term (kunlangeta) they used to describe “a man who ” repeatedly lies and cheats and steals things and ” takes sexual advantage of many women—someone who does not pay attention to reprimands and who is always being brought to the elders for punishment.” When Murphy asked an Inuit what the group would typically do with a kunlangeta, he replied, “Somebody would have pushed him off the ice when nobody else was looking.”
