About this skills training
You may have heard the old proverb, “Time heals all ills.” Well, it’s not true. When you’ve endured the manipulation, betrayal and abuse of a sociopath, the wounds are deep. If you just kind of move on, they may scab over in time, but they don’t really heal unless you consciously focus on your recovery.
Therapists can be helpful if they understand your experience. But even so, therapists can’t recover for you. You’re the one who needs to recover. It will go a lot faster, and you’ll feel a lot better, if you make a decision to focus on it. So what can you do?
Last fall, my colleague, Dr. Liane Leedom, who is herself a survivor, presented a Lovefraud webinar program called, Skills training for recovery from narcissistic abuse, gaslighting and toxic stress. She teaches you what to do on a daily basis to move forward in your own recovery.
I’m proud of this series — there’s really nothing like it anywhere.
The program is actually six different webinars, some with multiple parts, so it’s comprehensive. Plus, Lovefraud is offering special pricing for the month of October.
20 years of collaboration
Let me give you a little background.
I’ve talked about my personal experience with my sociopathic ex-husband, James Montgomery, many times. It was because of that experience that I founded Lovefraud.com back in 2005.
About a year later, Dr. Liane Leedom reached out to me.
Dr. Leedom had also been victimized. Even though she was a highly trained psychiatrist, she was blindsided. What she learned about sociopaths, meaning people with antisocial, narcissistic or psychopathic personality disorders, did not at all match what she experienced in real life.
She came to the conclusion that her training was deficient.
Dr. Leedom and I have been friends and colleagues ever since. Over the last 20 years, we’ve definitely seen a growth in awareness about sociopaths, although today people seem to be calling them “narcissists.” Personally, it seems to me that many of the those labelled narcissists may actually meet the diagnostic criteria for antisocial personality disorder or psychopathy. But at least people are becoming aware that evil lives among us.
Lack of treatment for survivors
What hasn’t improved very much, unfortunately, is treatment for survivors.
Tangling with a sociopath really messes you up. After the profound betrayal, you may feel utterly helpless and hopeless. You may be overwhelmed by the wreckage of your life, unable to take a step in any direction. You may be berating yourself for getting into this mess. Looking back, you realize that you knew something was wrong all along, but the sociopath kept explaining it away. You may be afraid to stay with the person, and afraid to leave.
If you go for treatment, you’ll probably get a diagnosis of anxiety, depression or PTSD. In fact, you may be so emotionally dysregulated that you get misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Yes, I’ve heard of that happening.
The real problem is that you are suffering from the trauma of narcissistic abuse.
Here’s the scary truth: So far, no treatment has been proven to help anyone recover from narcissistic abuse. So, Dr. Leedom set out to identify a recovery approach. And that’s what Lovefraud is offering you now.
Based on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Dr. Leedom is a professor of psychology and counselling at the University of Bridgeport. She is also certified in dialectical behavioral therapy, or DBT. DBT has been proven effective in treating mood problems, anxiety and issues related to trauma. DBT has several components. One of them is skills training, which research shows to be the most useful component.
So Dr. Leedom’s program focuses on teaching you the skills of recovery. You learn how to clear your head, reduce stress, gain control of your emotions, deal with sociopaths and move toward personal growth.
Her program adapts classic DBT skills training specifically for survivors of narcissistic abuse. These are skills you can use every day to make your life better.
Six specific webinars
Here’s what you’ll learn.
Introduction: FREE! Your first step towards real recovery from narcissistic abuse and trauma.
Dr. Leedom explains how people become disordered, why they do what they do, and why it’s so hard to get over the betrayal.
Module 1: Mindfulness to clear your head of sociopathic gaslighting
The main tool sociopaths use is psychological control. That’s what you need to overcome. You’ll learn to calm your mind, soothe your senses and let go of emotional suffering.
Module 2: Recovery from the bodily effects of toxic stress
You’ll learn crisis survival skills for when you’re emotionally overwhelmed, so you can slow down, calm down and think.
Module 3: Strategies for reducing emotional distress and vulnerability
Mindfulness enables you to regulate your emotions, so you can decrease your suffering and vulnerability. You’ll learn strategies for changing your emotional responses, even in tough situations.
Module 4: Evidence-based tools for dealing with sociopathic behavior
Why is sociopathic behavior so shocking? Because it violates your beliefs about what it means to be human. You’ll learn different skills and approaches for when you have no choice but to deal with a sociopath.
Module 5: Post-traumatic growth and spirituality
Life is a journey, and another word for recovery is growth. Even this awful experience may help you cultivate wisdom and achieve self-transcendence — the final stage of adult development.
Tools you can use every day
Everything you’ll learn is geared towards overcoming narcissistic abuse. Therapy is great, but your therapist may not be with you when you need to make a decision in the moment. Dr. Leedom teaches you tools that you can use every day to deal with real life.
But most importantly, if you want to finally put the narcissistic abuse behind you and move on, you’ll learn how to do it.
