Cold-Blooded Kindness: Neuroquirks of a Codependent Killer, or Just Give Me a Shot at Loving You, Dear, and Other Reflections on Helping That Hurts is the tongue-in-cheek title of this book by Barbara Oakley, with a foreword by David Sloan Wilson. It belies the serious research and investigation done by this remarkable, highly educated and acclaimed woman.
Oakley is associate professor of engineering at Oakland University in Michigan, and her work focuses mainly on the complex relationship between neurocircuitry and social behavior. The list of her varied experiences reads like fiction ”¦ she worked for several years as a Russian language translator on Soviet fishing trawlers in the Bearing Sea during the height of the Cold War. She met her husband while working as a radio operator at the South Pole station in Antarctica. She went from private to Regular Army captain in the U.S. military, and is also a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
In Cold-Blooded Kindness, along with a project called Pathological Altruism (forthcoming book by the same name this year), Oakley was investigating if altruism could be taken to the extreme and become pathological and harmful.
Some “researchers” have, for what they thought was the “greater good,” slanted their research to show what they believed was an altruistic motive. For example, many people have heard about the “battered woman syndrome,” and how it is now incorporated into laws in many states as a mitigating factor in cases where women wound or kill the men who have battered (or supposedly battered) them. What isn’t known, though, is that the “research” into this “syndrome” was badly flawed. The researcher was a woman who was so intent on doing the “greater good” of protecting abused women, that her altruism caused her to slant her studies, and anyone who pointed out that her research was suspect, was in fact, “blaming the victim,” and therefore, evil.
Oakley points out that she started to seek out a person who appeared to be altruistic to the point that it became harmful, but her own research led her to see the situation differently than she had planned.
She started investigating a Utah woman and artist named Carole Alden, who had “been abused” and had killed that abusive husband, Marty Sessions. But the book really isn’t so much about Alden murdering Sessions, for which she ended up in prison, but about how Carole Alden, though presenting herself as the ultimate altruist (rescuing animals and people), was instead, the ultimate abuser.
The examination of the human brain, and the social interactions of children, and the development of empathy and altruism in children, are explored. Both the social and the genetic aspects of these are gone into in depth.
Oakley explores “co-dependency” and “enabling” behaviors and calls for more actual research into these areas, especially concerning possible sex hormone links and to genetics. She also points out while little, if any, real research has been done on “battered women syndrome,” and it is not accepted in the DSM-IV, it is accepted in many state statutes.
Oakley never comes out and actually says Carole Alden is a psychopath (though the word is used and described in the book itself), but Oakley’s book describes Carole Alden’s behavior relative to the Psychopathic Check List-Revised. It shows that while Carole presented herself to others as a victim of circumstances, and as altruistic to the nth degree, she was, in fact, a controlling, manipulative, using, abusing, pathological liar, who took in dozens, if not hundreds, of stray animals. She cared for them poorly in most cases, but better than she cared for her own children.
It is also possible that Carole is a serial killer, as there are two other deaths of men she was involved with that were “suspicious” in their very nature.
When Oakley was corresponding with Carole Alden, she was convinced by the letters that Carole Alden was the personality she was seeking for her thesis of “altruism gone too far,” and that Carole was indeed the victim of this. Upon meeting Carole though, in prison, Oakley began to see the real situation. When she investigated the family, the crime, the real history of Carole Alden, not just the self-serving tales of how everyone abused her, Oakley began to see the malignancy. Carole changed her story, came to believe her own lies, and slanted all aspects of “truth,” even in the face of evidence to the contrary.
Not only is this a history of one pathological woman who murdered one man and possibly more, and who abused and neglected her children, it is about the personality disordered in general who present themselves as victims, when in fact, they are at best—co-victims/co-abusers with their partners.
Oakley is not “blaming” legitimate victim, but seeking to find the common thread in some partners (women and men) who participate to one degree or another with the abuse they endure. She is seeking a way to educate and warn these people so that the abuse can be prevented.
While Carole Alden took in a series of ex-convict men, who were addicts, to “cure” and “fix” them, which appeared to be altruistic in nature, in fact, it was anything but altruistic. It supplied Carole with her “professional victim” and “professional altruistic” persona that she was seeking to establish. What caused this in Carole, when her parents and other siblings were apparently normal and highly functioning members of society?
I tend to underline and highlight important passages in my books as I read, and I finally gave up trying with this book, as the first 100 pages are almost all day-glow yellow.
This is a highly readable book, and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of one of Oakley’s previous books. I will also be one of the first in line to buy her upcoming one Pathological Altruism. I highly recommend that anyone who is seriously trying to figure out how we (former victims) are alike, and how the fake altruism of some psychopaths works, read this book.

Yes, Oxy, I agree.
I think this particular site is amazing. There are so many insights here, seeds of new books.
I am grateful for you, Oxy, and Skylar, and LL, and everybody else who is posting and sharing and supporting.
I’m here several times a day, recently, and it truly helps, and it truly forces me to see what’s really there, not just what I hoped was there.
I think part of Oakley “getting it so well” is her sister is a psychopath, and the other thing is her bio-engineering background and her scientific bent. That woman is BRIGHT and has a great wealth of education from both university and from life that is science based…..so she has I think the PERFECT platform to understand what is going on. Unfortunately too many of the “ivory tower” experts from University who really don’t have a PERSONAL STAKE in dealing with psychopaths may not entirely GET IT.
I think it takes BOTH to really really REALLY get it—as much as any of us can get what another human is thinking/feeling.
Glad you are here too, Superkid, it takes time to heal and someone on here today described the healing as like a river, flowing rapidly sometimes, with rapids, falls and eddies….twists and turns, but eventually getting there to calm and peaceful delta. Just keep on paddling! You’re gonna do fine!
OHHHH, atttacking are we Oxy,….?
Don’t forget who beat you on the head and took your stupid prize!HA!!!! take that!!!
So let me attack right back.
First, Do you really think Peck is a spath? really?
He obviously has many narcissistic qualities and I’d say he has a God complex too.
Second,
Do you really think Sam couldn’t figure out how to score higher on the PCL-R test? really? I could. He could even better. Scoring low for a psychopath might be hard, but scoring higher for an intelligent narcissist who makes it his business to study malignant narcissists, would not be difficult.
We really have to look deeper.
I’ve gone around and around in my head for two years trying to figure out how to know a spath when I see one. And the truth is the spath is the one who appears the most normal, the most gregarious and fun-loving. Everyone wants to be around the spath.
Your examples in your next post perfectly prove my point: “The priest who molests kids, the deacon who steals from the church, the Nun who embezzles millions from the church coffers to gamble with”the preacher who beats his wife, or verbally abuses his family. ” THESE ARE ALL DONE IN HIDING.
In the end Jesus said it best (as always), “you will know a tree by the fruit it bears”. Each word in that little sentence is loaded with meaning, because, you see, a tree takes a long time to bear fruit. That means you have to wait and see before you know whether someone is a spath. What effect did their actions have on those around them?
Dr. Peck may not have been the best husband or father, but she stayed more than 40 years. And what effect did his writings have on humanity? What kind of fruit have they borne in your life?
*skylar grabs the stupid prize and runs out the door…*
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh my goodness, this has been such an interesting thread today….
Sky, I don’t know whether Peck is a spath or not. Or even if he’s a narc, but seriously does it make any difference with the damage they create? A spath, a psychopath, a narcissist, ALL are personality disordered, ALL create and cause drama and wreak havoc in the lives of others and ALL ARE NOT WORTH THE POT THEY PISS IN AND ALL WANT TO WASTE OUR TIME!!!! ALL OF THEM SKY.
Now, as far as Sam, I have agreed and disagreed with Ox about this guy. I have the book “Malignant Self Love”. I LOVED the book. It was INFORMATIVE. I don’t give a rats ass that I paid 45 for it and that Sam could profited from it. Whatever!!! I didn’t buy it FOR HIM, I bought it FOR ME. Everyone that writes books profits, including what was Mr. Peck’s People of the Lie. Sam’s book made a HEFTY contribution to my understanding personality disorders in the first place long ago when I was trying to figure spath out. I still have the book and it’s as ripped up and yellow as the day is LONG. That book put me on the road to even an INKLING as to what was going on in my relationshit! I don’t agree with ALL of what Sam wrote, but most of it, is very insightful, coming from he claims is a Narcissist, although I believe he is a Psychopath, but oh wait, we’re splitting hairs here right? So malignant narcissist is “somewhat less” than what is a psychopath? NOT! ALL are dangerous. It doesn’t MATTER.
It also doesn’t matter to me who writes the damned book if it helps someone. Who gives a shiat if they’re a spath, a psycho, or a VICTIM of such? All align pretty well and all give differing perspectives. Shoot, it’s like a psychological debate in print about what is what, how malignant is malignant, I mean even there’s debate about what the DSM will ultimately give reference too.
I remember when I first came here and Ox would piss me off by telling me that it doesn’t matter the person is TOXIC. Yep. But here’s where I hedge and still have a bit of disagreement. EVERYONE has a degree of ‘unhealthy” I am of the opinion now that “Normal” is merely a setting on a dryer. I believe even HEALTHY runs on a spectrum now. But what I DO know is that if a person has a PERSONALITY DISORDER, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, THEY ARE MORE THAN TOXIC. PERIOD! And the aftermath of someone who has been so exposed is life damaging, altering and no less than absolutely devastating. No doubt about it.
There are specific dynamics that happen in a relationship with ANY PERSONALITY DISORDERED person that simply DO NOT HAPPEN with someone on the “normal spectrum high or low”.
Sky, you are absolutely BRILLIANT in my opinion and exceptionally insightful and self aware. You’ve had your entire life to “study up” on Narcs and spaths, given your family background too. It is ADMIRABLE. The ways in which you understand spaths is absolutely amazing and your contributions here as well as personally, to my life have helped me to untie MANY knots. I LOVE YOU!
But in this way, i disagree. ANY disorder is dangerous.
If peck’s wife lived with his ass for 40 years, she was probably already set up. Who knows what her story is. I’m sure, to some extent and assuming here, she would like to preserve her husband’s memory as well as his infamous book and who knows whether SHE HERSELF is pathological or comes from the “old school” in which it’s too late for her to change her mind about it? I’m just guessing here. Because she stayed with a Narcissist for 40 years DOES NOT make her golden in my book. It makes her sad in my mind.
I think it’s very difficult to let go of the familiar. No wonder I’m going through hell right now. It’s not just going through hell STILL over losing my spath and trying to understand what the hell happened, it’s also losing MY ENTIRE BIOLOGICAL FAMILY TOO.
I simply wasn’t willing to deal with the shit anymore Sky.
And people wonder why I consider contacting my last ex. I haven’t done it, but I’ve been TEMPTED too, for reasons I’ve shared with you personally already.
Dunno. Guess the “healthy” in me (whatever the hell THAT is) is fighting off a lifetime of spaths, narcs, psychos.
I have one of the biggest addictions of all Sky. To personality disordered people. It’s like being born addicted to crack, only no one understood what that meant when it came to my background.
But I do.
And it’s HELL HELL HELL
LL
Dear Sky, LOL ROTFLMAO
Old Sam V didn’t just fake his PCL-R “test” he is an embezzeler, he is a cheat, he is a beast….and some of them do pretend to be “nicey, nicey” on the surface while being creeps and cons underneath, look at Bernie Madoff for example….BTK killer, Ted Bundy, some of them can keep up the front, but others are not able to for example CHARLIE MANSON….as for peck being a “psychopath”? Maybe not a score-30 one, but he may very well be high in the TRAITS that would make him a pith poor husband and father all the WHILE he pretended to be so sanctimonious and “holy.”
Jesus warned us about the hypocrites like the Pharisees who pretended to be so holy, but actually were doing the very things they preached against. How about all the preachers that have sexually molested kids and others? Doesn’t mean their message is bad, just that they are FAKERS and NOT LIVING THE MESSAGE THEY PREACH.
Oxy grabs the prize and runs like a gazelle out the back door! LOL (((hugs))))
**sigh**
Ox, you silly willy. LOL! I don’t disagree with you, BUT I do. Sam’s book helped me tremendously. He wasn’t wrong either. In most of the book, he had the Narcs down to a T, oh and the psychos and the spaths…..
Toxic. All around.
LL
I’m reading from the sidelines and am finding both delightful humor in the debate as well as a sense of reassurance that I’m among very wise friends.
I’m so new here, but I love the environment you’ve all created.
Hugs!
(And so now I’m grabbing the prize and running out the FRONT door).
Hi, I hope all of you Mom’s have had a wonderful Mother’s Day!
Love,
Eden
That movie about him, “I, psychopath” is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen…that man makes my skin crawl, to say nothing of the way he treats his poor trauma bonded wife….
Actually, his books and his writings (which BTW are NOT very original at all) are pretty right on, but he is doing the old carnny trick of using a thing he was born with like a disability as a way to make money and that is all it is about….he even has that FAKE PhD and got really upset when the producer of the movie pointed out it was FAKE….LOL
I’m not sure now if he still owns them but he did have several “N and P survivor sites” that he ran for his own fun, money and amusement selling his book and promoting himself wildly.
I went to a carnival side show once, “theh lizard lady” and this older woman, probably 60+ sat in a purple bikini in chair with her skin flaking off around her in a pile, like a lizard shedding its skin…it was disgusting, yet sad that this poor woman had to make her living from exhibiting her grossly horrible skin condition that DID make her look like a lizard shedding her skin. Yet, I paid my money and I gawked too….so I too have read some of Sam’s writings, and I also know others who were first introduced to the N and P concepts by googling and finding him and his writings. Doesn’t mean though that he has any REAL INSIGHT into anything….he’s just a one-trick pony!
Super Kid,
Um….. do you know what the prize is that Oxy and I are fighting over? which you just grabbed and ran out the door with?
It’s called the stupid prize and it goes to who ever was the stupidest “N” Supply for the longest time to the most evil spath or the most number of spaths. Oxy and I have been fighting over it for a while now. Yah sure ya wannit?
Hey Eden!!!
