Yesterday I happened to be watching CNN as the verdict in the Casey Anthony trial was announced. Like much of America, I was stunned that she was acquitted. From the reports I’ve seen about Anthony’s pathological lying and lack of concern about her missing daughter, I am confident that she exhibits sociopathic traits. A criminal profiler came out and said on national television that she is a psychopath. See:
Profiler says letters show Casey Anthony to be a psychopath
All of us at Lovefraud know what sociopaths/psychopaths are capable of. So I was more stunned by one of the so-called CNN pundits, Dr. Frank Farley, who came on the show later. He said that the prosecution’s theory of Casey Anthony’s motive for murder was ludicrous. No mother, he claimed, would kill her child simply so she could go out and party.
Farley actually posted his views in a blog piece on CNN, in an article called Infanticide in order to party: A nonsense motive. He wrote:
No credible motivational psychology that I know of would support that a single mother who seemed to love her child and who had lots of back-up parenting, in the grandparents and perhaps even from a brother, would go through the careful planning and complex, unpredictable, scary process of killing and disposing of her child in order to get a bit more free time.
This could not be true, unless she was seriously mentally ill, and no available evidence showed that. To go against that deep human instinct to take care of a child, and instead kill that child, demands a very significant reward in the opposite direction, and partying doesn’t rise to that level.
What sane human being could wake up in the morning and say, “Gee, I could have a fun time if I killed my daughter.” There was also no evidence that Caylee was a difficult child whose behavior could lead her mother into a homicidal rage. This whole scheme goes against our deepest instincts rooted in thousands of years of evolution.
Obviously, the guy knows nothing about sociopaths. These disordered individuals have no love motivation. They are capable of killing for the flimsiest of reasons. Take the case of Diane Downs, cited in Dr. Robert Hare’s book, Without Conscience. She shot her three children in 1983 so she could carry on an affair.
ABC News recently aired interviews with Diane Downs, along with a clinical diagnosis: psychopath. Watch the videos here:

Professor Farley
Now here’s what is really scary: Frank Farley, Ph.D., is a psychologist and professor at Temple University, and former president of the American Psychological Association. He teaches educational psychology to graduate students. Here’s his biography:
Frank Farley, Ph.D., Temple University College of Education
Farley has come up with this goofy theory of “Type T Personalities.” The “T,” he says, stands for “thrill-seeking,” and certain people are driven to a life of constant stimulation and risk-taking. In fact, he recently wrote an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times, claiming that this is why politicians cheat on their wives. I mentioned it in a recent blog post:
More on powerful men behaving badly
Actually, cheating politicians are probably displaying their sociopathic tendencies—grandiosity, overactive sex drive, recklessness, sense of entitlement. But Farley doesn’t get it. He also doesn’t get that it is quite possible for a woman to kill her child for barely any motivation.
And this is what he is teaching to his educational psychology students. No wonder so many people do not know that the sociopathic personality disorder exists.
In Psychology Today, lots of opinions about the Casey Anthony trial.

Thanks for posting this link, Donna. I’m going to put off reading the links (I looked at the headings) for a while until I am in a less emotional mood over the verdict. I am working on changing my anger at the jury into seeing that there CAN BE a positive side of this if the anger generated in Americans makes the prosecutors and the public more outraged by this kind of neglect and eventual murder of the child…that the “mother’ who appears so “nice looking” can be recognized as the monster she is…that she can incite dialog about evil, and about psychopathy.
Just as the death of the little girl “Amber” led to the “amber alerts” that HAVE SAVED LIVES, in fact, just this year a little girl was saved by the amber alert when a motorist saw the car and the girl and followed it until police could get there. So this kind of horrible death does not have to be without a positive outcome for society at least.
I think the majority of the public have been emotionally involved with this case, just as “OJ” became the case of that decade, this one is the “case” of this decade….and I have no doubt that Casey will reap exactly what she sowed in the end. She has not won a thing except she is not going to jail for life or facing the death chamber, but I’d rather go to jail I think than to be the “most hated woman in America.” She makes Amy Fisher look like Mother Teresa.
I’ll read these in a few days. Thanks again.
Isn’t she pregnant again? I don’t watch TV but I heard something about her having her baby in prison? Reminiscent of the Diane Downs case. Remember her? She shot her 3 kids because they were inconvenient, but then she got pregnant by a prison guard and showed up in court smirking. The whole thing just makes me sick. I cannot fault the jury in this case though. They were just following the letter of the law. No one even proved HOW it happened – so it couldn’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that she did it, even if everyone knew she did – or at least had something to do with it. On the other side, so many people have been convicted of crimes just based on circumstantial evidence and then released later when DNA samples prove their innocence. The jury did what they were supposed to do. It’s just an unfortunate outcome.
Yes, there are rumors that she is pregnant, but so far, they are only rumors. Time will tell!!! I think she looks a little puffy myself.
I’m not for sure who the father of Diane Downs last child was but I think it was conceived on the outside while she was out on BAIL. I saw a rerun of the interview with her baby daughter though….she was adopted by a nice couple and did well until she was a late teenager, got preg, dropped out of school, had the baby….then another baby she gave up for adoption…confronted her bio-mother…then got her schiat together and is raising her first son, going to school (college) and apparently doing well.
Diane Downs still denies hurting her children….no parole….the other two kids were adopted by the DA that prosecuted Diane, the little boy I think was paralyzed and in a WC but both of them have completed college and are adults.
I’m not sure what started the rumor that Casey is preg, but with that psychopathic-type attorney she had there’s no telling! I would believe anything about either of them. LOL
Oxy, I would really enjoy reading about Diane Downs’ children and how they turned out. I remember one was paralyzed on half of her body, and the other one from the waist down. The third one died. I can’t imagine how hard it was for that girl to confront her mother. I’m still struggling with anger toward my own mother, who is more of a narcissist than a psychopath. I was under the impression that Diane Downs got pregnant from a prison guard, but who knows? Casey Anthony is just as chilling a psychopath. I thought about you guys when I heard the verdict and was unable to get on here and blog. Really a let down. But I don’t blame the jury for doing their job and following the letter of the law. It must have been very hard for some of them.
I heard a little of a radio show. Caylee’s body was found in the SAME area that Casey would put her deceased pets.
It was NOT the job of the jury to determine HOW Caylee died. She was IN A SWAMP while her mama parties and did not report her for 30 days. Why didn’t that tip the scale when deciding if Caylee was POSSIBLY MOST LIKELY murdered?
Just how many accidentally killed children with ducttape over their mouth end in the same area of the swamp where the mother used to leave her dead pets?
I think they had ONE strong (Spath) juror who pressured the others. They reported the first vote was 8 to convict. These were SHEEPLE. That’s just my op.
That Casey is already talking about getting pg again or even adopting is a huge red flag to me that she is seeding the idea b/c she is pregnant. You don’t replace your child like it was a puppy, yet that is exactly what it seems she is doing.
Katy,
Agreed. There are spaths everywhere, even on juries. If she had been found guilty, there wouldn’t be as many offers of money for interviews – because that was expected. What could be more sensational than a not guilty verdict? It keeps the drama and the scandal going. That’s what P’s love most.
But you know what? Maybe, just maybe, Nancy Grace will get it into her sick head that sensationalizing spath behaviors, PLAYS RIGHT INTO THEIR HANDS. Their power comes from an uncanny ability to manipulate the sheeple. Putting the spotlight on that evil casey is the reason she got a spath legal team to defend her so vigorously. The attention played against justice this time and it often does. Remember OJ.
OMG
Did anyone watch the link Donna gave up to Diane Downs??? OMG. Diane GIGGLED when describing her daughter reaching out to her with blood gurgling from her mouth. I couldn’t watch the rest of the interview. Too overwhemingly sickening that a mom could GIGGLE at such a memory.
Hi Skylar,
Who is Nancy Grace? Is she on a radio/TV person?
I’m disgusted that she got off too. It’s so wrong!
Katydid, I’m going to watch the video of Diane Downs tonight, if I can stomache it that is.
