2 Be Happy – I am sorry about your kitty but I think Oxy is right. I have never had a vet recommend euthanasia when there is a chance for my pet to heal – when my first golden retriever had bone cancer in his jaw – he was old (14+) and we put him down – the vet cried too and yet he told us that if our beloved boy was young, 1, 2 or 3 – he would still have recommended putting him down as the cancer would come back and was really not treatable…
We lost two rescue dogs in a row here two years back – one collapsed at our feet in mid-February with a ruptured tumor bleeding out and then the next rescue I took in a few months later had bitten her previous owner and although I am fairly experienced – after 2 months with us she got so comfortable and decided the house belonged to her and she put 3 fangs through the back of my hand on January 3rd- so she had to be put down. (I gave her back to rescue and they had a behaviorist work with her and they determined she would only bite again and again so…) and it was heart breaking for me and my kids – but lo and behold – we waited a bit to sort fo recover from the losses and third time was a charm and we welcomed the sweetest boy into our home on January 1 this year and he is a total gem and healthy. Don’t despair – you have given loving homes to animals and done what you could. Do not let kitty suffer, just know she is making space for another to be loved….

tobehappy,
I did a quick search and found that in humans, it really helps to take vitamin D and calcium. I’d add a bit of magnesium too (might help soften the stools).
Even better I found that homeopathic calcium and magnesium are even more effective. If you’re going to go all out, you might as well find a holistic doc who can advise you on dosages, or get a book from the library.
It’s going to be tough but kudos to you for trying.
My spath brother kicked 2 kittens to death in 1986 and he kicked 2 more which lived – critically injured. The first time, the kitten had brain damage, she was only about 6 weeks. I took her to a specialist, it cost me several hundred. They used anti-inflammatories intravaneously and she lived. Her name was Haley. Then a couple weeks later he kicked Haley’s brother in the face and tore his lower lip off his chin. I named him Sherbert and he lived 10 years. That cost me over a thousand. I took him to an animal plastic surgeon. Back then, cost was no object for me. I can tell you that if you look, you will find a surgeon willing to do anything for your animals as long as you are willing to pay.

Update: I spoke to a veterinarian tonite. She told me that cats have amazing ability to heal and to bring her in with the xrays tomorrow. For free! I told her my financial situation. She said she might be able to splint it better than we did…because Darla was in pain and trying to bite us.
So…I am looking forward to a second opinion. She is very comfortable all day in blankets in a laundry basket. She is eating and drinking. Going to give her more meds later. So….pray for Darla!
When a human being doesn’t like animals and hurts them…they are definitely a sociopath. TRUE red flag. My xhusb’s friends told me that he tortured animals when he was young! OMG, there were more red flags than a Chinese parade…..and I married him anyway!
I’m glad I divorced him and I hope they jail him down in Florida. He owes me 50k in back support! Creep!
His new Brazilian wife called me out of the clear blue a few weeks ago….asked me if he was ever violent or had a bad temper!!!!
Well, you got your green card and citizenship now…LEAVE HIM!!! lol

Yay! don’t give up tobehappy.
Yes, hurting animals is a definite red flag, but don’t be fooled by spaths like mine. He professed to love, love, LOVE animals. B***S**t. He was just mirroring me. and Later he would wear my skin: he carried pictures of my cats in his wallet (Sherbert and Haley) and showed them to people as his “kids”.

Midas, my parents cat has had all type of stuff: cancer in his throat, was operated. Years later it was thick again and the doctor feared the worst, but it turned out to be a cyst (aftermath), as a precaution she also had his spleen removed because of the dark spots she noticed on a picture… turned out false alarm.
He once went missing for a few days and must have been stuck in a garage or something. He came home again, but hiding under the bed (very abnormal behavioiur for him)… turned out after inspection at the vet that he must have licked some chemical cause he had burn wounds in his mouth (actually a hole) as well as his throat. He stayed under observation with the vet for a week. Got all healed, except that his miauw is raspier than it was before.
Two years ago part of his tail hung limp. Turned out his tail was broken. We kept him inside for 2 months. Healed.
Alas we can’t do much about the arthritis. He’ll be 15 next spring.
My Nelson had kidney stones whe he was 3. Got remedied. But when he was 9 he was close to death, puking all the time, not eating anymore: diagnose failing kidneys. The vet didn’t dare to make any promises. Two weeks later he had pulled through. I had to give him pills each day and give special food, and monthly and later 3-monthly chekc ups. On his last check-up they expressed surprise that his measurements were so healthy. They projected that he migth live at least another year. Alas, he foudn his second youth in such a way that he loved to go outside at my parents too much while I was in Nicaragua (my first time, no spath then). He tried to jump through an askew door/window while my parents were painting at my appartment. He slid into the wedge and unfortunately died from long oedemia. They told me when I got home, and 5 days later I adopted Darwin to fill the gap and at least have a living cat walk in the house, instead of the ghost visions of Nelson. It’s 3 years ago, but sometimes I still get choked up over losing him. He got to be 10 years old.
The family cat before Midas was Panter. He was the curiosity case at the vet each time. He always seemed to have some rare stuff going on. And yet, he lived to be 15. He once got trapped in a clamp trap at my grandparents when we were on holiday (neighbour had rabbits and didn’t like cats). He got out of the trap somehow and lived to use all four paws after all.
Yup, cats are VERY resilient. They truly have 9 lives.
So sorry to hear about the killed kitten. I thought ex-spath liked animals, but many of his dogs died young in accidents. The summer with his dad, his dad refused to allow him to go walking with their dog by himself. They were ok with it, if I walked along. I’m not sure, but I consider it possible that Midas’ broken tail might have been his fault. Midas wasn’t all that agile anymore when my ex-spath was in Belgium, and I always had the impression the break might have been caused by his tail getting stuck in the door. It’s likely ex-spath did it, because Midas got it while he was here.

Skylar….That is true. If you saw how my xhusb would lie in bed and pet my cats, you would never think he would hurt them. But, when he got angry at me…he would kick the cats out of the house…literally, and hurt them.
So, these sick sociopaths can’t be trusted ever. Like you said….they mirror people.
I could always tell who he was out to dinner with…which friend/business associate. He would come home and talk just like them!
I guess he never developed his own identity…the “ID” was never developed. He was so weird …looking back.

skylar,
My ex has his own pets that he neglects. He kills random cats that wander onto his acreage and other smalls animals like raccoons. He catches them in live traps then kills them. I used to believe him when he said that the cats were feral and it was a mercy killing before they starved or got diseased. I didn’t like it at all but I’m not a country dweller and figured I just don’t think the same. The small animals he said were a nuisance too, but he was setting traps in the entrance to the woods! I guess the blinders came off when one of his cats had kittens and they disappeared one by one as soon as they got to be a nuisance too.

Wow, Darwin…..what stories!..
Thanks for sharing! I guess its fate. The fact that this little kitten could cross the windy road I live on and get hit and survive…is miraculous. If the one boy didn’t stop to redirect the speeding cars around her…she would be gone…and it wouldn’t have been a pretty sight.
I learned my lesson to be VERY careful NEVER to let her out of my house! I would let her come out on my deck when I was in my hottub…then into the yard…I never thought she would cross the road. But, she did . She was soaked…fell in the lake first, then ran home.
Only she never made it. 🙁
She is never alone. Someone is always right by her. I truly believe that “love heals”.

Dawn,
It’s possible that my spath actually likes cats, but that doesn’t mean he won’t kill them. He feels entitled to.
It’s hard to relate to such warped thinking but the best way I can understand it is, to think of those muslim guys who think it’s ok to kill their daughter in an honor killing. They raised the child, they feel entitled to the child’s complete loyalty and obedience and if they don’t get it then they can kill the child.
Obviously that kind of person has very shallow emotions of “love” for their offspring. What isn’t so shallow is the narcisstic injury caused by the “insult”. It’s hard to imagine that many humans walk around with such shallow emotions and if it weren’t for the fear of legal retribution, they would not hesitate to kill another human being. But it’s true.
That’s why spaths kill cats, because there is not much chance of retribution and because they can.
