Many people commenting on this blog have expressed the hope that sociopaths/psychopaths will pay in this lifetime for their evil deeds. Well, I am writing to tell you that if this is your wish, statistics are in your favor. You likely just need to wait it out because psychopathy is associated with life failure, as I will explain.
In a recent study, Psychopathic personality traits and life-success, Dr. Simone Ullrich and colleagues examined relationship success and life success in more than 300 men, they have followed for many years, these men are now 48 years old. In their study, psychopathy was not associated with success in any of life’s domains. When they examined symptoms of psychopathy the interpersonal domain (being charming and manipulative) was not related to ”˜”˜status and wealth” or ”˜”˜successful intimate relationships”. Impulsiveness and antisocial behavior reduced ”˜”˜status and wealth.” The authors state “ It is concluded that psychopathic traits do not contribute to a successful life and that the findings cast doubt on the existence of the successful psychopath.”
You may be asking, What about all the “successful psychopaths” we hear about? First of all, I believe that these are a very tiny minority. Remember that the disorder sociopathy or psychopathy is a group of impairments that I relate to an inability to love, poor impulse control and deficient moral reasoning. Confusion arises because some narcissistic individuals have impaired ability to love accompanied by grandiosity, but their impulse control and moral reasoning are not as impaired. These individuals may achieve some life success (Journal of Personality Disorders, Vol 21(6), Dec 2007. pp. 657-663). So if a person is unable to love and grandiose but not excessively impulsive or immoral, that individual may achieve some career success. But still an inability to love prevents any real relationship success.
So now you can move on. Fate and Karma will get that psychopath/sociopath. You can go about your life working as I do, on trying to love more and live better.
Okay, here is the latest (and longest) letter. Let me know what you think:
Re: Army Fraud Investigation Failure to Notify Witness
Dear Congressman XXX:
I was told by the Army that I would be kept apprised about a complaint I filed against X. The Army was supposed to keep me apprised of the status of my complaint; to date not only has the Army not kept me apprised, but has rebuffed my efforts to find out the status of the case by blocking my email inquiries, etc.
In August 2008, I contacted Captain X to file a charge of adultery against X. During that time, I was unaware of any additional criminal charges being sought against X. During the conversation with Captain X, I was asked questions about X’s abilities to walk, talk, drive, and perform sexually. He informed me that X walks with a severe limp, talks with a pronounced speech impediment, and claims he cannot drive, perform sexually, or feel anything from the waist down due to a head injury. I had never seen such symptoms in my 2-month relationship with X. 3 of my friends also had met X and had never seen any symptoms of a disability. The captain asked if my friends and I would be willing to sign sworn statements. We agreed to cooperate, and he agreed to inform me of the outcome.
On September 26, 2008, I obtained and faxed sworn statements to the platoon sergeant, who stated she received them (see attached). I also provided a tape of 25 voice messages from X as supporting evidence on approximately October ___. I met the platoon sergeant in person to deliver the tape. I also forwarded multiple emails detailing times and days he drove to my home (he claimed he could not drive). The army seemed more interested in his “malingering” than the adultery, but they assured me they took both counts very seriously. On or about November __, an investigator came to my house to take a statement. At that time he informed me that he had never received the 4 sworn statements I had faxed in September. He took new statements from me and the 3 other witnesses. During his visit, I also supplied contact information of other acquaintances of X who could also swear that X exhibited no disabilities during their acquaintanceship. All three army personnel promised to keep me informed of the outcome. They said they take these charges very seriously. During this time X had a “no contact” order against contacting me.
After the investigator re-obtained our sworn statements in November, I never heard from them again. I emailed the investigator twice. He always said “we will keep you updated” or “I will let you know”. In January, when I inquired by email, the investigator informed me that the investigation had been completed, but that the army was dealing with the deaths of two soldiers and could not make it a priority. (no mention of outcome) Again, I was told I would be updated as to the outcome. There were no further updates.
On February 11th, X appeared on an internet forum I frequent, claiming that he had had some troubles but that they were all behind him now and that everything was “back to normal” or something similar. I immediately contacted the three army personnel to get an update on X’s situation and send them the link. Two of the three responded. The investigator said X had received “administrative punishment” and that he would forward my request to the chain of command (the captain). The captain said X is still living on the base and has not been discharged. He said the case had “gone to legal” and would give me no further information. Again, I was not updated on the outcome. One of the other witnesses emailed Captain X to ask about the outcome, as did I. Captain X then blocked my emails after expressing his upset that I shared his (public) email address with the other witness. (I believe the army e-mail addresses are public information). It makes me wonder whether the fraud case that the army was so interested in ever went anywhere. I emailed the investigator and platoon sergeant again on 2/11 asking for the outcome. I have received no response to date.
As a tax payer and a key witness in their investigation, I would be grateful if you could please look into this.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for additional details or documentation.
Sincerely,
Let Matt help you from here on out Stargazer. My gut reaction is to strip it down as much as possible. Matt knows better than I what is extraneous and what is vital.
Some other time I’ll twit Matt with insulting remarks comparing lawyers to vermin. This is one of those times when a lawyer is very good to have around!
Oh, and I did find the last email sent to me by the captain:
********************************************
I don’t want to come off rude but please do not give my government email address to anyone. I was contacted by the XXX’s and I do not know them and I did not give them my email. I am sorry that you ever got involved with X but I can only do so much to him as far as the ARMY. We have ordered him to stay away from you in any way but it would be stronger if it was a court order. You have every right to go to the police with this matter.if you feel threatened by him. I myself think he does have problems but I can’t make him do the right thing. You could have someone tell the truth about him on your RTB Siteand force him off. Just an idea
*********************************************
He blocked me immediately after that when I asked about the outcome.
His email in response to my friends and I both asking if his appearing on my reptile forum was a violation of the “no contact” order and asked if he could do anything about it.
I’m not sure of the success of my P. I know he can’t hold a job and hates to work. I know he’s living off some woman who doesn’t mind. I know she has nothing ahead of her but heartbreak, but I fear she’s just as unbalanced as he is. She knows that he’s led a double life for three years and honestly, she doesn’t mind. It’s kind of creepy. She was more interested in if I was upset.
To be honest, I feel like I was in a nightmare. I think about it and I actually feel sick to my stomach. It’s kind of a “monster diet”. I can barely eat anything.
Stargazer,
What I strongly suspect is that this case has been swept under the carpet for some reason. The officer you were communicating with is not able to change that decision, although I don’t believe he agrees with it. If the decision can be changed, then it will be the congressional investigation that does it.
The congressional investigation will shine the light of day on the investigation process. Who did what with respect to the process will be exposed in excruciating detail. If the decision not to pursue a case against your S/P was not entirely above board, the investigation will continue.
There are all sorts of unofficial ways a military investigation is simply “forgotten” without actually being resolved. There are a lot of people who benefit from the “problem going away”, not just the S/P. In a “zero defects” “high accountability” environment, more people than just the S/P have a stake in this investigation than civilians can imagine.
The congressional investigation will cut through any dishonesty or laziness in this case.
It starts at the top and goes all the way down to the command concerned, crossing the desk of every single CO on the way. Each one will want a report generated by his subordinates, just for his own CYA. Then the command concerned will have an extensive investigation, with so much CYA going on the entire unit will probably end up in full MOPP gear.

Just kidding!!! Then the report will go all the way back up the chain of command to the Congressman’s office. During the whole process some fresh faced go getter from the congressman’s office will occasionally check on the progress of the investigation. This only heightens the hysteria. Trust me, congressional investigations are highly effective.
A congressional investigation should never be used maliciously, but your case sounds reasonable.
As for my angle; I hate cheeseball Lt’s. They really foul the works. May as well relieve some decent NCOs of the burden of a cluster B officer.
All right, Elizabeth: Now we need full MOPP gear in the LF store, along with the baseball bats, the (self) lie-detectors, the tiaras, hipwaders, and the rest. Excellent contribution!
Elizabeth,
My concern is that I’m keeping this in my mind by stirring up more drama. Doesn’t this go against NC? No matter what they do to him will not change the fact that I have to leave my reptile site. 🙁
Okay, I pared it down a little and decided to go ahead and send. If nothing happens, I don’t what else I can do. I suppose I can take the story to Channel 9 news, but I’m not sure if they’d be interested either. Thanks for all the free and great legal advice. If any of you are ever in my area I owe you all some massages!
Stargazer:
I’d strip the letter down a bit further. Keep the focus on the fact that the Army hasn’t followed through with you. I think that I’d say that you filed the complaint regarding adultery and the Army, based on facts you presented indicated they wanted to investigate him for malingering.
I’d leave out all the stuff about his walking with a limp, not driving etc. As for the actions of the Army, I’d strip that down to dates you approached them, a copy of the email and the fact he blocked his email. I wouldn’t go into the various reasons they gave — it’s sort of a he said/she said.
The more detail you put in there, the more reason you give the Congressman’s office not to investigate.
Star, This is not “revenge,” it is JUSTICE…..different kettle of fish!
You deserve justice and the taxpayers deserve officers that do their jobs, and get rid of a psychopathic officer. Thhink of all the people whose lives he will mess with in the service who will have no recourse—so this is a public service. If you are strong enough to do it, go for it. If it messes with your head too much, then don’t….but I don’t in any way see this as anyting but his just deserts.
TOWANDA!!!! BOINK! BOINK!!! That’s the sound of my skillet hitting his head!
