If you are like me, you probably don’t even question why the sun rises every morning and sets in the evening. It seems like we expect it to happen and we don’t even get curious to question it. It simply is a natural process that happens to be consistent every single day. How about a clock? Have you wondered why do those hands constantly circle to the right? I have never really wondered what they are chasing on and on, but they are consistent too. I know sometimes you and I wish we could stop the time, or go back in time to edit a part of our life, to cut a section of that film, trash it and put the parts back together. But it’s not how it works sadly. The time moves on, it never stops, so does the clock. It consistently has its hands circling to the right.
Just like the regular clock, we have a natural emotional clock called Amygdala, an almond shaped part of the brain that acts as a natural thermostat, warning us of any danger. It simply ticks naturally like the clock and it is consistent – it warns us about dangers, be it physical or emotional. We do not question why it works consistently and how we can control it, but we simply follow its warnings, because of its important fight or flight response, especially when we have emotional fires. Remember when you last had this warning? I definitely do and I chose “flight” and I took a plane out of State, as far as I could go, fighting would have been a terrible scene, as some of you lovefraud readers have experienced.
When our natural fire alarm, Amygdala goes on far too often, it becomes impaired, as if the hands of the clock getting stuck between 12 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions. They tick back and forth between those two positions, the natural thermostat is stuck and so are we. Anxiety takes over because our baseline anxiety levels becomes reset, meaning amygdala tells us there is danger when in fact there is nothing that threatens us emotionally any more. We start having obsessive compulsive disorders, panic attacks and many other physical manifestations of the stress and trauma we have experienced.
Watch the short session and follow the moves to understand how our natural thermostat works, reasons it breaks down and how we could all make steps towards repairing it to set our desired temperature moving forward (be a thermostat, not a thermometer).
