John Edwards has joined the parade. The former North Carolina senator and presidential candidate was indicted last week for using campaign contributions to keep his mistress and their baby in hiding during his 2008 run for the White House.
He follows former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who admitted fathering a child with a member of his household staff, and Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who had to resign as head of the International Monetary Fund after he allegedly tried to rape a hotel maid in New York City.
A lot of people are asking, why do they do it? Why are these rich, powerful men willing to chance ruining everything they have achieved for momentary pleasure? Psychology researchers have come up with several answers.
Risks vs. rewards
WRAL TV in Raleigh, North Carolina, interviewed Scott Huettel, associate professor of neuroscience at Duke University, about the Edwards case. Huettel studies how the brain weighs risks and rewards. According to WRAL:
The brain, he says, asks this question when making a decision: “Is what I’m going to receive from this better than what I have now?”
Short-term gains often win, while long-term consequences are discounted, Huettel said.
Factors such as wealth and power do not often correlate with a higher cost on risk, Huettel added. In other words, those who have the most are often willing to risk the most.
More power, more adultery
Time Magazine took this argument further. Not only do powerful men tend to assess risk differently than the rest of us, but they are also surrounded by enablers who have an interest in keeping the powerful person in power, and help cover up the indiscretions.
Time also described forthcoming research:
A study set to be published in Psychological Science found that the higher men or women rose in a business hierarchy, the more likely they were to consider or commit adultery. With power comes both opportunity and confidence, the authors argue, and with confidence comes a sense of sexual entitlement.
Type T Personality
Then there’s Frank Farley, a psychologist and professor at Temple University, and former president of the American Psychological Association. He’s come up with what the calls the “Type T Personality.” In response to the Schwarzenegger story, he recently wrote an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times entitled, What makes politicians stray?
In my view the factor most responsible for philandering in public officials is a predisposition for risk-taking, which also happens to be an essential quality for politicians. My label for it is the “Type T personality,” with the “T” standing for thrill.
Farley has been discussing his theory of thrill seeking for quite awhile. He was quoted in a Time Magazine article back in 1985. In 2006, Farley was interviewed about his theory when Ben Roethlisberger, the Super Bowl quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, went riding a motorcycle without a helmet, was hit by a car and suffered serious head injuries.
At that time, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote:
Dr. Farley divides risk takers into Type T positives — inventors, entrepreneurs, explorers — and Type T negatives — compulsive gamblers, criminals, people who engage in unsafe sex.
Incomplete explanations
All of these theories strike me as partially accurate, but incomplete, explanations for the sexual misbehavior of powerful men. Yes, the brain may find rewards now more appealing than consequences later, but certainly more is involved in behavior that has the potential to blow up everything an individual has worked for. A sense of sexual entitlement doesn’t explain this level of arrogant risk, and neither does the thrill factor.
Measuring psychopathy, however, may very well explain what is going on. Components of psychopathy include superficial charm, egocentricity, need for stimulation, deceit, lack of remorse, impulsivity, irresponsibility and promiscuity. Certainly all of these traits are factors in the egregious illicit affairs of powerful men.
But then we’d have to start using the “P” word in reference to politicians and titans of the business world. I’ll bet that a lot of people don’t want to do that.
Yes, something needs to be done. Every 30 seconds a woman is being abused domestically. The second cause of death for women is being murdered by her man!!! I didn’t make these up!
As I said, with technology today, abuse is getting worse because its easier to find people and fool them via electronics!
I’m happy that Donna is doing something to help our young, but we need to reach EVERYONE. Had someone taught me about con artists in high school, red flags, sociopathy…my entire life might have been different.
As a teacher and parent of teenage girls… I see the need to reach them younger and younger. Our society needs to address the problems that technology has only made worse!
Kids are committing suicide over electronic bullying..etc. My oldest daughter just went through and is still going through a very bad time….never thought it would happen. Facebook comments …twitter…texts messages….hurt these kids. Its good and its bad.
Watching the Casey Anthony trial is a real eye-opener too.
I am going to suggest this to the board of ed where I live…kids need mentoring in MIDDLE school. There is just too many devasting stories today about this.
I never thought I would see our society has having so much negativity…but its all out in the open now.
We need to protect our future generation of kids.
I would really like to do something like this, but do not even know where to start. Does anyone have suggestions?
So sorry to hear about your oldest daughter going through bullying. It can be very devastating. It’s best to just stay away from all this electronic media. I really used to hate Facebook. I wasn’t even on it at all until I quit my job. I was way too busy before to be bothered with it, but with staying home came a little boredom and that led me to start up my Facebook account. I went from few friends to 140 in no time. But I am smart about it. I do not divulge any info on there I do not want anyone to know. And I have received many friend requests from people I don’t even know so I ignored their requests. I have thought about deactivating my account and getting out of it altogether. I still might, but for now as long as I am safe about it, it is OK. If I see one sign of trouble, I am outta there.
I’m not sure a higher percentage of this kind of stuff is going on, but because of the media we are INFORMED about it almost instantly no matter where it happens. Also our press is MORE OPEN, during the presidency of JFK they knew about him sneaking women into the white house but kept a lid on it so it was going on but people just didn’t know about it.
Oh you are right about that Oxy. My bff even told me how her “uncle” tried to abuse her when she was young. Almost everyone I know has someone in their own family that has abused someone!!!
We live in a sick world. No wonder I like to be alone a lot. I like ME. lol I don’t like too many people. I am VERY outgoing and sociable and friendly…but I don’t let many people IN. …into my world.
Everyday my girls come home with stories from school about teachers…peers…nasty secretaries…etc…
People just S&CK!
I don’t mean to be negative…but it is what it is. Look at all of the songs written about betrayal…and the movies made…and the soap operas….because life is not fair…evil is out there…and YES, we need to love one another…..but we need to be WISE and when we see or feel evil …..RUN.
Anyway…my aunt, who is 76, told me stories of what happenned in her family…back in the day. OMG….So, you are right…its only out there more…and its easier for the evil ones to pick up prey…from the internet. Only difference.
HUGS
Sometimes I feel like the mythical guy with the lantern, (can’t remember his darned name! CRS!) looking for an honest man.
But not everyone is a psychopath, we are all human and all make mistakes but not all mean or evil, so when we do find someone who is good to the bone, it makes them all the more valuable.
Well, Johnny boy is gonna have to cough up some dough!!!!!

Oxy ~ Wow, is it possible that he’ll actually have to repay it???
Talk about just desserts LOL
H2H, He may also be facing criminal charges as well….you are right VERY JUST!!!!!
Oxy ~ He is so SLIMY!!! I’d love to see him in prison as some guy’s b%*ch!!
Men behaving badly……
Tonight I had a ‘crew’ of men (9) walking past my house, in town for the weekend to party….they were hooten and hollaring and as I looked out…..the one with the cowboy hat was making his way into my yard where my dafodills are planted (awaiting me to dig them up this weekend and transplant at my new house) and he PEES!
I screamed out at him….WTF are you doing? He swiftly pulled up his pants and ran out of the yard and rejoined his group.
I get about 2 pee’rs a month in my yard……who the hell does this…..so I called the cops.
2 cops show up and called me to ask if I wanted to press charges, I said……well…..I want to talk to the guy.
I went out to the corner……and confronted the cowboy. I told him he had two choices…….I could press charges OR….he could show up early tomorrow and dig up the rest of my bulbs and fill the rubbermade bucket of which he just pee’d right in front of!!!!! ON MY DAFODILLS!
I said it doesn’t excite me one iota to be digging in YOUR URINE…..he agreed. But, if YOU want to do it…..that would work for me! He and his buddies asked for my phone number and said how early could they be here…..I said I’m easy!
They appologized as the cops laughed and said, she’s a ball buster, but that’s more than fair.
I shook his hand, and said……Eeesh, we both know you didn’t wash your hands ….I shouldn’t have done that! 🙂
They said, we’ll see you in the am!
That was one way to solve a problem…….and get something done at the same time huh?!
