Actions speak louder than words… or do they?

August 18, 2011 //  by Liane Leedom, M.D.//  114 Comments

This week two people contacted me, both adult daughters of sociopaths. In one case her father and in the other case her mother has psychopathic personality traits. Interestingly, both disordered parents claim to be “Christian” and the theme of our discussions was the disparity between what the parent says and what they do. Both women shared the belief that this disconnect between words and action is particularly damaging to children. I agree with this assertion because I have also seen it in other cases. Why would the disconnect between words and actions be so damaging to children? Consciousness develops gradually during childhood. Consciousness means connecting words, thoughts and fee …

Florida sex offender wins custody of child

July 21, 2011 //  by Liane Leedom, M.D.//  17 Comments

Among the many worries parents like me have is "What will happen to my child if I die?" For that reason, I take no risks with my personal safety. I don't ride motorcycles, always wear my seat belt in the car, and do everything I can to stay safe. What I consider to be my worst nightmare happened to Trista Crews, mother of Miranda Wilkerson. Trista was married to registered sex offender Donald Coleman though Coleman's offence was impregnating Crews when she was 14. In the style of Mary Kay Letourneau he married the girl when he got out of prison and fathered two more children. The news hasn't said much about those two who are also now orphans because Trista died a month after her …

LETTERS TO LOVEFRAUD: Her son is psychopathic, and she fears for her granddaughters

July 20, 2011 //  by Lovefraud Reader//  6 Comments

Editor's note: Lovefraud received the following email from reader whom we'll call “Grandma.” She would appreciate any advice to help her deal with her son and granddaughters. My son is categorically a psychopathic personality.  In my mind, I can remember the tendencies starting about his high school years.  I wonder why nobody else recognized this. Now he is the 29 year old father of 2 small girls.  The youngest child, 3-1/2 years old, is telling stories of her father hurting her vagina.  She is in counseling and the counselor is the one who reported this to law enforcement and to DSS.  (The counselor believes it to be true.)  However, because of my husband and my involvement in the lives …

Defending marriage

June 29, 2011 //  by Liane Leedom, M.D.//  45 Comments

The State of New York just passed a law allowing same sex-couples to marry. Opponents of same-sex marriage complain that the practice undermines the institution of marriage. Therefore, Congress enacted the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996, which bared federal recognition of same-sex marriages and allowed states to do the same. DOMA also created a federal definition of "marriage" and "spouse". Marriage is defined as a "legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife," and spouse is defined as "a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife." To all those who really want to defend marriage, I say that nothing undermines the institution of marriage more than …

Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy, meeting highlights: Researching victimization

June 3, 2011 //  by Liane Leedom, M.D.//  176 Comments

Having spent time listening to many psychopathy researchers, I can attest to many times coming away with the feeling that very critical insights are being missed. An appreciation for the bigger picture just isn't there yet. For me the bigger picture always includes the family. A sociopath may prey on strangers, but usually that is after a lifetime of practice on family members. The reason this piece is so critical is that the personality disorder, psychopathy is a pervasive disorder of human social behavior that affects every relationship the disordered person has. Considering what this disorder actually is- a pervasive disorder of human social behavior, the perspective of family members …

If someone is violent, they are capable of worse

April 8, 2011 //  by Lovefraud Reader//  77 Comments

By Ox Drover Recently on Lovefraud there have been several people who have talked about how their ex-significant others have been violent, and yet they still have strong feelings for these (mostly) men. The readers find it difficult to go “no contact” and refuse to listen to the pleas of these guys to get back with them. Statistics show that more women are hurt or murdered at the time that they are breaking up with someone who has formerly been violent than at any other time. Breaking up with someone who is physically violent can be dangerous. Staying with someone who has proven they are physically dangerous and capable of violence is more dangerous. Here are stories about an ex-cop …

How the pain of abuse lasts a lifetime

January 12, 2011 //  by Donna Andersen//  180 Comments

A few days ago, Bill Zeller, a 27-year-old graduate student at Princeton University, died. The cause: suicide. The reason: He was tormented due to being repeatedly raped as a child. Zeller left a 4,000-word suicide note that eloquently explained the effect that the devastation had on his life. There is a link to it in this article: Princeton student kills self over rape as child, on CBSNews.com. Story suggested by a Lovefraud reader. …

How American child rearing practices lead to ADHD and bullying

December 15, 2010 //  by Donna Andersen//  82 Comments

More and more children are being diagnosed with disorders such as ADHD and autism. Dr. Gabor Maté of Canada says that the root cause is that the nurturing environment necessary for proper child development has collapsed in America, leading to children who are emotionally detached and have difficulty controlling their impulses. This 60-minute interview is fascinating—be sure to watch it all. Or, to save time, just scroll down below the video options to read the transcript. (Thanks to Skylar for the suggestion.) People will complain about drums, but not domestic violence

December 10, 2010 //  by Donna Andersen//  39 Comments

A guy playing the drums in a Johannesburg townhouse complex drew complaints within minutes. The blood-curdling screams of domestic violence drew no reaction. This was all shockingly documented in an online video released by a South African advocacy group, People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA). Read Video test of domestic abuse awareness in South Africa gets more than 500,000 hits in DailyMail.co.uk. Link supplied by a Lovefraud reader. …
