What happens when we fail to take action against bad behavior

April 8, 2013 //  by Donna Andersen//  39 Comments

A few articles in the news recently illustrate a disturbing failure in that can be seen in a multitude of situations throughout society. These cases are from the U.S., but I imagine the pattern applies just about anywhere. In Dallas, Texas, Antoine Flowers, hired for a top information technology post at Dallas City Hall, resigned after four months on the job. Two weeks later, he was arrested for stealing and pawning $10,000 worth of the city's iPads. The real question is how he got hired in the first place. Flowers' resume stated that he'd worked as a software engineer at NASA, was a college education director and had served in the Army, with top-secret clearances. This did not raise …

LETTERS TO LOVEFRAUD: Female psychopath turned into a snarling, spitting monster

July 15, 2023 //  by Donna Andersen//  123 Comments

Editor's note: A Lovefraud reader, we'll call her Betty, sent her story. It's a tale of a run-in with a female psychopath who likes to destroy people for the fun of it. I got divorced and moved from Texas to California. I was 45 years old, and was hoping to transition from my career as an RN. I'd worked in the newborn nursery and the increasing numbers of drug dependent newborns were breaking my heart -- I was experiencing burnout. I tried physical rehabilitation for adults, but that too brought me in contact with awful suffering, and I didn't have enough to give my patients. I had a painful divorce and a painful career, and made the decision to pull myself together and start over. That's …

No matter what you do for a living, there’s a good chance that you’ll come across psychopaths at work. Why? It’s quite simple — we live among millions of psychopaths, and they’re everywhere. These disordered individuals are hiding in plain sight in all demographic groups, communities and walks of life. So yes, you’ll encounter them on the job — perhaps as co-workers, customers, or vendors. Or, in a particularly difficult situation, the psychopath could be your boss. So how do you spot psychopaths at work? And if you think someone might have the traits, what do you do? I recently came across this terrific explanation and summary at Observer.com: This is how to deal with psychopaths and toxi …

An empowered approach with personality disordered co-workers

September 29, 2017 //  by Lovefraud Reader//  2 Comments

Editor's note: The following article was posted in our Forum by the Lovefraud reader "Bluemosaic." It is such a helpful and insightful article that I want everyone to see it, so I am elevating it to a blog post as well. I have experienced longterm bullying and toxic behavior from a co-worker. I have recently given my two weeks notice to my employer and the peaceful road ahead is in sight. I am going to give a little background, for readers to better understand the vantage point from which I speak. I will begin with a couple quotes: "Always speak your truth, even when your voice shakes." Eleanor Roosevelt "In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." George Orwell, 1 …

New research says 3% to 21% of executives have psychopathic traits

September 13, 2016 //  by Donna Andersen//  Leave a Comment

Psychopaths are as common in the upper echelons of the corporate world as they are in prison, according to forensic psychologist Nathan Brooks. In research presented in Australia this week, Brooks and his colleagues found that 21 percent of 261 corporate professionals in the supply chain management industry had clinically significant levels of psychopathic traits. Brooks said job candidates should be assessed first on their character, and then on whether they have the needed skills and qualifications, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. One in five bosses is a psychopath, research reveals, on SMH.com.au. How to tell if your co-worker is a psychopath, on NYPost.com. Story suggested …

My sociopathic husband as the gross older guy

July 31, 2015 //  by Peace in Chaos//  6 Comments

I Need Help, No Really About a year after I had my daughter, I finally had to find someone to help me with all my data entry and paper shuffle to keep up with the work load for the business the spath and I ran, but mostly I ran.  I still had my office out of my home to try and save on overhead, but also so I could work when my baby was sleeping.  After making an extension on the office, I had a separate entrance created to the office off of the house so I could have employees enter the office without entering the house. I finally ended up hiring a younger girl, 18, that was in college.  It worked out well because she only needed part time and that's all I had in the budget for the moment.  I …

Commissioner blasts SEC for allowing criminal banks to continue business as usual

May 26, 2015 //  by Donna Andersen//  7 Comments

Last week five big international banks were found guilty of rigging international currency markets and fined $5.5 billion. The very next day, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued the banks waivers from automatic punishment so they could continue business as usual. SEC Commissioner Kara M. Stein did not agree with letting the banks off the hook and issued a scathing dissent. The banks UBS, Barclays, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase & Co, and the Royal Bank of Scotland had already been granted a total of 23 waivers after previous wrongdoing. Bank traders actually met in an online chat room called "The Cartel" or "The Mafia" and conspired to rig rates. The scheme ran for years. According …

Research shows smart, psychopathic business managers may be able to conceal their disorder

September 16, 2014 //  by Tracy Andersen//  4 Comments

When Carolyn Bates was an undergraduate attending the University of Hudddersfield in England, her final-year project for her psychology degree turned out to be groundbreaking research into the links between psychopathy and intelligence. According to Science Daily, Bates said that she was intrigued by research that showed while one percent of the population were categorized as psychopaths, the figure rose to three percent in the case of business managers. “I thought that intelligence could be an explanation for this, and it could be a problem if there are increased numbers of psychopaths at a high level in business,” she said. After administering a number of tests to 50 participants, Bate …

LETTER TO LOVEFRAUD: A tale of two sociopaths

July 27, 2014 //  by Lovefraud Reader//  3 Comments

Editor's Note: This letter to Lovefraud was submitted by Lovefraud reader whom we'll call “Thomas."  Names have been changed. The First Tale: The girlfriend's ex Last we communicated I was interested in getting your advice on how to handle the ex-husband of my girlfriend and the terror he rained down upon her. You may remember he was a lawyer who knew how to deal with the law and use it to his advantage as a shield enabling him to be even more effective as a sociopath. The threats, the lying, the manipulation and the poison that he spread was unconscionable and designed to hurt and ruin the lives of others unless they did what he wanted. I was so taken aback by his unrelenting agg …

LETTER TO LOVEFRAUD: My experiences as a private-duty caretaker of a disabled sociopath

July 9, 2014 //  by Lovefraud Reader//  7 Comments

Editor's Note: This letter to Lovefraud was submitted by a Lovefraud reader whom we'll call “Garth.” I've been in the medical field since 1984. I've been a Nurses Aid/private-duty caretaker for a disabled patient since 2009. It took me three years to realize exhibits all the traits of being a sociopath. I came across your site and plan to get your book.  Your site and short videos really helped me see him for who he is. I am still with him but I am no longer stressed about it. I stay my distance and only care for him in short periods through the day. I don't know how his wife has dealt with him so long. I feel suckered that my patient seduced me into his illness and plays these emot …

From one university sex scandal to another

April 27, 2014 //  by Tracy Andersen//  2 Comments

In December of 2012, a female Florida State freshman reported that she was sexually assaulted by James Winston, Heisman-Trophy winning quarterback of the Seminoles. Winston was never charged. The police claim it was due to lack of evidence, although a New York Times report says there was plenty, including DNA, witnesses, and a secretly recorded video of a portion of the incident. The incident did not become public until almost a full year later, in November of 2013. Florida State did not say whether administration officials, including President Eric Barron, were aware of the accusations against Winston. Penn State University, which endured the Jerry Sandusky scandal, in which the …
